Had one when I was a bit younger. Great dogs. She was a rescue and had some behavioural issues though. Very protective and territorial to the point that one time, my mother yelled at me, the dog bit her face and put a tooth through her lip.

Came to say this. They can be great, but they need a lot of exercise, and you absolutely need to socialize them early on.

Huskies are similarly hyper without lots of exercise, but they are always goofballs on downtime, much better with people.

Huskies hand down. We have two and a German Shepherd. The shepherd is almost 3 and the huskies are turning 2 now. Huskies are zoomers and you have to equip your house for them. If you dont, theyll be escaping every chance they get. Your backyard has to be prison escape proof. Also, except to get 10x the hair everywhere with Huskies, taking them to the groomers is a must. But theyre so loving and loyal.

as to the OP. We got our shepherd two years and it was the best decision we ever made. Our families freaked out that we got a giant ass dog so early in our relationship. But now both our families want him. He had growing pains, he would love to pee and poop as soon as you put a leash on him.

That stopped quick. My shepherd now is just a lazy dude. We created a mini bed spot for him at the end our of bed and he just lays there all day. He looks to have activity for 20 minutes and come back in. Super loyal, theyre incredibly smart, and they love you to death. Their bark is extremely loud though and be prepared to handle him if he starts to pull when he sees other dogs. Whenever ours sees small dogs he goes beserk

Yeah, of course. Not the dog's fault it was mistreated. Mom got a few stitches and healed up fine.

My neighbor used to have a beautiful German Shepard named Sascha. She was a very playful and loving dog as well as a fantastic guard dog.

I'm sure they make great companions.

I had a purebred for a good part of my preteen to adult years. Best dog I ever had, though admittedly I wasn't totally prepared to take care of him for the long run and I hate myself for being neglectful a few times later on in his life. He passed away two years ago and I still haven't gotten around to wanting to get a new dog.

Just fills me with jealousy, sadness, and anger when I see other people enjoying their not dead dogs or just immediately replacing their recently deceased dogs.

Tbf, I'm not upset that people do that sort of thing. If it's gonna help you cope then by all means go ahead. I just can't do it myself though.

Had one from age like...7 until 20. Good girl, did like finding new ways to escape the yard, lol.
Never really violent, had pumps, didn't keep any :(
Nice German shepherd came into our front yard yesterday. Friendly sniffer and biter, didn't want to be pet.

Liked our dogs.

They need lots of exercise.

I researched them about 2 years ago. With exercise walking them twice a day? I heard it's not good if they jump a lot due to their hip issue.

I'd get a nice tan working line. Similar to the one who's pic was posted itt. Issue is I'm away from the house like 9 or 10 hours except weekends. I'd socialize it early on getting a pure breed. Early stages I'd crate but after 2 or 3 years I'd get rid of the crate.

Honestly, simple walks aren't enough unless they're at least properly long walks, and even then. These dogs are meant to be working dogs, and honestly, there are too many people who have no business owning them. If you want a house dog, get a breed meant for that.

What else type of exercise you recommend? I'd also train the dog of course.

They like to run. Fetch, catching stuff, if you like to run and go to the park, or have a big backyard and people to be with it while you're away, it could be nice.

I can get a bigger yard. But not sure what to do if I'm away 9-10 hours due to work unless I can work from home.

I spoke with a breeder whos a retired nurse and she said her dog was fine when she was a nurse being home alone. Not sure if she was lying to get me to buy. Another breeder I spoke with said to wait until I retire =(

I wouldn't crate either once the dog is a bit older and long as it's not wrecking the house.
