Really enjoying the game even if I'm just starting out. I played at first as the dancer (man that is kinda a not for kids story jeez), and then grabbed the knight right after her, but I didn't really like either of em, and I wanted the thief (and wanted to have him all the time) so I restarted as him.

He is so fun lol!!! So glad I restarted as him, I like his story so far alot more as well (man the dancers was kinda depressing, I was like, let me control her please, I don't wanna be behaving like this!!).

The thief though just steals EVERYTHING lolz, it was awesome, also his abilities rock, I love his hp steal ability, I just save up 3 blasts and it's heals him to full. 3 save ups gives you a 100% chance to steal from enemies as well (Even if none of em have had jack worth it yet).

He rocks in battle and seriously rocks out of it as well (the dancers outside battle of summoning an npc was kinda cool as well, but I like the thieves ability better by far (and I don't see what the freaking use was of the knights ability AT ALL...who cares if you can freaking duel people, you don't even get a rewards for it!!).

I don't know what my party composition is going to end up being but I'm thinking I will probably add the hunter next, then the cleric and finally the scholar, which will give me a full composition for breaking (Elemental + physical + healing + hunter stuff lol).

I may at least at first pass on the dancer/knights stories, cause I don't care for em much and I don't want them in my party, but we'll see. I prob wanna hit all the towns anyway (i'll do a grand loup) to steal everything with my thiefy hehe. He steals nuts that give perm attribute boosts!!!).

Glad I got this game on sale:)

How's the game a do? I've been interested since I like the production team (Square's B+ team), but I haven't been able to get ANY information on, like, gameplay mechanics...

Take Bravely Default as a counter-example, everyone talks of its mechanics even though it's very simple

I started as the apothecary since I've always like roleplaying as doctors in rpgs (fallout etc). His story is "alright" but holy shit his concocting gets so broken late game when you can give infinite BP to everyone on your team. In terms of storylines I think the hunter and scholar have standout ones. Both of them are fantastic. Great game all in all.

Yeah, I'm doing/adding the hunter right now in fact:)

Gameplay mechanics are interesting, it's kinda like final fantasy (old school) but with a few extra mechanics added in.

First enemies have weaknesses and you can break them by attacking with a weakness (which basically removes most of their defenses it seems from other forms of attack), it also stuns them for a turn, so it's really useful to determine enemies weaknesses.

Second you have BP (battle points?), you start off with 1 and gain one every round that you don't use any BP, and they power up your attacks (giving you extra normal attacks per BP (up to 3 additional spent), or boosting abilities etc. It can boost your chance to steal for instance, or the damage you do with hp steal attacks (which makes you heal more) etc. It's effective to wait to use abilities that use SP till after you have some BP stored.

The thief for instance has two early abilities that make him pretty much able to go on forever solo, he gets hp steal (which is a full heal so far against anything (with enough hp) at full BP, and he gets SP heal as well (which is only 5% of total damage, but again, pretty much a full sp heal with full BP that way. If your fighting random stuff you can pretty much just alternate finishing off the last enemy with SP heal or HP heal attacks and remain at full all the time.

Each character though plays a bit differently. The dancer has basically magic attacks or buffs (and her support abilities make her buffs last longer etc)...she also can charm NPC's in town and summon them x number of times (they all do different things). It's probably a REALLY strong ability later on honestly, and it's easy to use.

The thief as mentioned can steal, but his abilities make him a great tank pretty much, he also dodges a freakton of attacks, and his stealing ability from NPCs gets you extra max health, speed, crit chance, evasion etc right from the start (and i'm sure it'll continue to roll in as the game progresses). You also get a ton of EQ and money.

Not really sure on the hunter yet, but it looks like she has an animal companion, I'll have to see how she plays a bit more, but if so, that in combo with Prim could be really good longterm (I may switch out the cleric char for Prim after trying her....cause I can see Prim being really useful in a full party with her buffs and NPCs).

The knight was VERY straight forward and had the stupidest by far outside of combat ability, he could duel people, but didn't get crap for it from what I saw (other then a tiny bit of exp), perhaps it gets better later. Meanwhile in combat he sucked hard as well, Prim was pretty much better in every way. I didn't play him long enough to get the ability that lets you attack random enemies 5-10 times or something like that, it probably would have made him very good against individual targets and boss fights. Still, he doesn't seem very fun or original at all.

Still going to try out all the others, Prims story initially was.......depressing? but I could enjoy watching it unfold after the painful start, and her ability to grab new NPCs throughout the game, and especially prep for major encounters that way, would add alot (even just that early merchant that gives everyone SP all the time (to full) could allow the whole party to have unending MP (and there is probably one for BP bonuses as well eventually).

Loving the thief though heh. I admit I'm cheating and reloading if he fails at stealing but only for important stuff like nuts pretty much. I know I can fail 4 times etc, but I mean, he has his pride after all (whole point of his story it seems lol).

Interesting, it seems like there are alternative methods of gaining abilities, and I have even found one way to use challenge now, but....it seems like the hunter girl can do the same thing as the knight.

Minor spoilers (but not story spoilers at all).

On further review it appears like while there are 8 characters, two characters share each ability (even if they are called something different).

I am not sure if the thiefs counterpart (the merchant) can also open harder chests though. Both can obtain the items from people (Although perhaps the merchant has to actually buy them?).

The hunter and Knight both can challenge NPCs, which I guess does have uses.

So far what I know is

Thief or Merchant
Hunter or Knight

That leaves 2 more pairings.

Pretty sure It's Dancer and Cleric

Which leaves alchemist or scholar as the last 2.

So if you want all 4 abilities, you need to choose one character from each pairing (from what I understand right now).

Some of those are easy for me.

I'm enjoying thief alot, and even if merchant is as good, I'm not giving up on him (he's my main anyway)
I didn't like knight at all (not just because of his ability) so hunter is the obvious choice there.

That leaves me with trying to decide between alchemist and scholar, but I think I pretty much wanna go scholar tbh.

And then I need to decide between Dancer (who was ok, good buffer at least), and Cleric (who would probably really help my party stay alive).

I could do the first chapter of each of them (Except the knight and the merchant) just to get a feel for both before choosing my final party.

I have noticed so far, that ....it appears like each choice has had a slightly "better" version. If the merchant can't unlock the same chests as the theif, he just flat out seems better (also if you have to pay for stuff with purchase....that is also a negative). The thief also has hp steal and sp steal which is pretty extremely useful.

Meanwhile the hunter has her animal companion AND can capture monsters (and use them in the field) while all the knight can do is start fights with NPCs (which the hunter can do as well). Not sure who is better in combat mind you, but I like the hunters utility much more.

I'm guessing between scholar and alchemist, that the alchemist has more utility, being able to combine items etc for stronger effects etc, so even though I prefer the idea of a black mage, I might go alchemist just for the bonus effects.

Finally you have dancer and cleric....I'm guessing the dancer has more buff duration utilities etc, while the cleric is better at healing. I'll check out the cleric with this play through (since I saw the dancer already) and make a decision after playing her for a bit.

From what I understand you can take a sub-class later, but I don't think you get the sub-classes special abilities (steal, guide, allure etc) but I could be wrong. If you do get the specials that opens up a ton of options, if you don't, then it makes sense to take the characters with the best abilities and then sub class into something else with more offensive/defensive/healing powers etc.

Oh well back to playing.

I liked him and his overall story well enough. But he was pretty terrible in battle. I chose him as the main character so I took him with me for everything, and it would have been so much better to have Olberic or H'aanit if I wanted another damage dealer, or just Primrose because she's more versatile.

Not that it matters though until late late game because Cyrus just nukes everything in sight
