People calling it the new Game of Thrones are kidding themselves, but it is a pretty awesome adaption for what is ostensibly a video game franchise.

I'm still trying to digest it, but it was compelling enough to keep me watching. Definitely no GoT though.

Also the games are loosely based on the book while the show follows it more closely.

I really liked it. But I hate how they handled the back & forth time jumps and somehow made it get worse with each new episode.

They could have looked at how Westworld & Watchmen handled their timelines/flashbacks. (I havent seen Westworld S2 or S3 so I dunno if they continued with that.)

And yeah its no Game of Thrones, but lets hope it at least gets a better ending.

I just mean that its popularity is largely owed to the games which have eclipsed the book, and video game adaptions have rarely been good historically.

That said Geralt is basically a carbon copy of the games' Geralt, it's like Henry Cavill studied the Witcher 3 for this role.

I get the impression Henry Cavill is kind of a nerd, so he probably did.

That Witcher 1 quest being in there was cool. It makes me want to replay it. The gameplay isn't the best, but I think it has my favorite story and atmosphere.

Its an adaption of the books but theres a couple major similarities with the games.

1. Obviously Geralts voice. Henry Cavill has stated that his introduction to the Witcher series(franchise?) was by playing Witcher 3 & that he based the voice on the games portrayal of Geralt.

2. The musical score. They were definitely listening to The Witcher 3s soundtrack while composing for the Netflix show. I was surprised it wasnt the same composer, it sounds like it could be part of the same soundtrack. They sure as hell didnt look to the music in the 90s Polish tv show adaption for inspiration.

If you're talking about the Striga... according to the lore of the game, the one you encounter in Witcher 1 is actually a second fight, when Adda's basically relapsed. So it's not the same quest.

He plays the role really well imo.

It's always hard to play a character who's been visually represented in other media like other shows or games, but I instantly liked him there.

I think the people who wanted or expected it to be the new GoT came in with entirely unrealistic expectations. Like I have a friend who started watching it and complained that it was too magical and fantasy.

Like no shit. It's about a magically mutated monster hunter. They never pretended it was going to be otherwise.

Is each episode kind of unrelated to each other or does it have a set story?

I'm only 2 episodes in and only the blonde girl seems to be getting much progression.

For people who haven't read the books, the Geralt storylines in each episode are from the short story compilations that function as prequels and world bulding to the main series.

I'm guessing the reason they did the time jumping thing was because they otherwise wouldn't have gotten to use the Yennefer character till episode 5 and no Ciri till the end of the season. This way you get to flesh out the characters in their own right rather than through how they interact with Geralt. It is awkward though. Like put a date stamp and location on it each episode the first time you change timelines.

fuck that treating the audience like idiots crap
It doesn't bother me, I've read the books and figured out what was going on almost immediately. But based on the amount of people asking "what the fuck is going on with this", clearly it might be worth considering. Losing your audience because they aren't smart enough to figure out what's going on isn't a winning proposition, and I'd like for the show to get enough seasons to tell the story. If that means a time stamp on some shit then so be it.

Fine but if you provide no contextual cues or exposition then there's really no way of knowing when is happening what. I was 3 episodes in before I realised we were in different timezones.

Did you like the show before finding that out? 3/8 episodes is less than halfway, not like it's a big deal to be confused during the first couple episodes of a show
