First lol, I read this as Taco buying age.

But also, I am surprised he would do that.
That will piss of a good part of his base, in the places he needs.

The difference is this is nationwide. 19 states already had it. Now the others will be doing it.

Yes, in this case it is good...I'm not even get into the pointlessness of smoking cigs, there are still many 18 year olds in HS as they turn 18 near the end of the school year, makes it easier to spread cigarettes throughout high school campuses and to underage kids. And that's just one potential positive. most people start smoking at a young age out of curiosity, get hooked, and keep going as adults...its not typically adults aged 21+ who are like "hmmmm...I think i wanna start smoking now".

My wife had a full year of maternity leave, obviously at a reduced rate, but still 12 months off to care for my son when he was born.

If I had taken that time off, my employer would have topped it up and it would be like getting paid at full wages for a year. I realized after 3 weeks with a newborn that was a stupid idea and let my wife take the entire time off to herself.

By contrast my wife had zero paid time and literally just had to use up all her sick time and then anything more would be unpaid.

Yea I'd be down for raising the enlistment age too. A lot of the 18 year olds they get are teens just out of high school, didn't do well in high school, don't put much thought into college or anything else and just say "well, might as well do this"...even 20 would be good. Gives them a good two years post high school to potentially gain some work experience, think it through and make a more educated decision as opposed to instantly saying "Yea i was an average C student all throughout HS i'm on my way to enlist" immediately after graduation. Of course that will never happen because its hard enough for them to get enrollments as it is...might as well take advantage of the vulnerable members of the graduating class every summer.

I know here the mother gets 3 months paid, that can be extended an extra 3 months at a reduced rate of pay, and if they want to take more time they'd need to take a leave, which doesn't promise them their job status when they choose to return. I've worked and seen quite a few co-workers have babies...anyone who took more than 6 months never came back. mostly because anything longer doesn't "hold" their position.

Personally I think it's counter-productive to an economy to have regressive maternity benefits (seriously a few months at a time compared to a 40+ year career) but hey as much as I dislike Trump or the current US political climate, this is a step in the right direction for Americans. A society that makes it difficult to have children really limits its own growth, and the security of present contributors of programs (such as social security, etc).

It's weird that you seem to assume it's mostly C-grade students or worse who enlist because they don't know what else to do or don't have better options. It's also weird that you think of it as the military taking advantage of vulnerable people.

A lot of people who enlist do it to utilize the advantages that military service offers. Like paying for certifications and college, getting that valuable job experience, and having something that looks good to future employers. Or a whole career.

Yes, and a lot of them do that because they lack options, or lack knowledge of options. It's no secret that the ASVAB is basically a brainlet filter, and low scores get sent straight to infantry. Heck, they encourage people who fail to make the cut to try again, when people scoring that low would be better off getting an evaluation.

Im fine with enlisting at 18 but unless its a world war 2 type war I think they should just train them and give them basic jobs within the military until they reach 21.

I disagree on raising tobacco age

It makes no sense to say "at 18 you're an adult and have responsibilities and consequences... but youre too young to smoke"

You go off to fight in Iraq but you cant smoke a cig?

Once you're 18 you should have personal freedom to do whatever you like

A 20 year old murderer will be tried as a sane adult yet is legally too immature to buy tobacco?

wut

It's a good idea

Space is the future, China, Japan and India are working on their own.

That's where technology is going to grow and in the future resources and security will be tied to how advanced we are in space

Its actually super smart to be ahead of the curve on this and it bugs me that people act like it's a bad idea just because Donald Trump said it.

Imagine If we opposed investing in cars and planes because we didnt like the guy calling for it.

This is the future , it matters
