Like, it came after Nintendo and SEGA. Then, it continued to thrive even after Microsoft entered the ring.

Google's Stadia will not a candle to the PS4 or PS5.

How did this occur?

The PS1 succeeded because it was disc-based, leading to more storage and grabbing up Nintendo's third-party developers.

The PS2 succeeded because it was also a DVD player.

The PS3 succeeded because it was also a Blu-Ray player and it didn't have the absurd hardware failures of the 360; PlayStation had also cemented itself as a pillar of gaming at this point.

The PS4 succeeded because it didn't commit suicide like the Xbox One and Wii U.

Yeah, and didn't the 360 destroy the PS3 for the first 6 years of their life cycle?

Nintendo is for kids. Xbox is for teenagers. Playstation is for adults

Doesn't really matter because the Wii dominated both of them for the whole generation

The PS3 is the only one that stumbled. High launch price, not too many interesting games, their ugliest design too.
But PS1, PS2, PS4 was great.
Hell I didn't have a ps1, but a N64 growing up. Wasn't until we got a ps2 I started checkin out PS1 stuff, and gotta say yea PS1 was better, alot of good games.

Because they have a large parent company that allows them to spend a shit ton of money on celebrity endorsements and pretentious advertising, which is what tends to sell.

Also the whole stealing ideas from competitors helps a lot too.

Uh, none of these dumb ass posts touched on the simple, correct and obvious answer. Third party games, period. Sony had no standards for third party devs and it was cheaper to make PS games anyway.

Xbox is eternally a pariah in the Asian market. Playstation is the ultimate choice for third parties. It's no wonder that the only failed Sony systems are the PS3 and their handheld line. They all launched at a price that put off devs because they knew they would not sell, and they lost a shit ton of former Sony exclusive franchises.

Look at the explosion of JRPG's on Xbox starting with the 360. Look at main Final Fantasy going multi platform and Square Enix making games on the Wii, even creating exclusive Nintendo franchises.

PS4 was less money this time around, and Sony was also forced to step up their in house game efforts, even though most of the games Sony makes are still overrated to hell and back.
