The way I've always saw it; it subverted things we were expecting from a sequel to The Force Awakens, but at the end of it all, the movie was still a paint by numbers Star Wars movie.
Hell, the movie itself even straights up tell you that this franchise have a particular formula that it's going to be regurgitating for years to come. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!

No, it wasn't. That's just something the toxics like to say because they can't handle all their theories being wrong.

No. It was boring and safe and ended exactly where it started. After all the so called subversion, we're still left with a ragtag group of rebels fighting an empire, rey is light side, kylo is dark side, Luke isn't in the picture, and significant characters like Finn get 0 development. That's not subversion, that's the film equivalent of treading water.

It did some interesting stuff and had some ideas but ultimately didn't follow through on a lot of what it could have.
