Certainly Elmo, at least today. Older people might remember Big Bird more fondly, but the Elmo Era has been in swing since 1996.

This might be because of age, but definitely definitely Elmo. Ive seen way way way more Elmo games and books and toys than I have for big bird. Its not even close. People do Elmo impressions more often, too. Elmo even has his own segment on the show, I think. I wasnt a Sesame Street kid, but I for sure think of Elmo as the face of the show.

Big Bird has certainly been around longer and has the less annoying voice imo, but Elmo had a toy a couple decades ago that sold out way too fast for any society to even pretend it was sane. Tickle Me Elmo is the only real argument for the character being more popular, but otherwise Big Bird remains more iconic.
