For me the items are almost used immediately except masterballs, I always save those for the title legendary.

I buy a bunch of healing items and use them as I lose HP. Ironically, I have a ton of PokeBalls in my Ultra Sun save (many different kinds, just for shinies).

Masterballs were mostly useless all Pokemon games because you could just save first, then try again. Sword/Shield is the first time Masterballs matter, because you can nab a spot in a stranger's GMax raid that has a shiny, and there is no saving and trying again, and you only get 1 ball throw with a small catch %. For that reason, it is worth hoarding even more because the right moment to use it is so hypothetical and huge.

I will mostly use the cheaper, more common potions outside of battle.

The best potions, I usually have a dozen of them by the end of the game and I only use in battle if healing spells don't cut it

Not only do I save them, I tend to ALSO go out of my way to get more... opening every treasure box even when I know it's garbage.

Precious and rare, sure to save my hide in a tight spot. Must not use frivolously.

This is one of the main reasons I like the potions system in Paladin's Quest.

You don't find random potions everywhere... ... often. Instead you find magic bottles that you can fill with generic medicine as needed. So a potion you find in the field isn't just one potion, it's one potion per outting, which makes using it more friendly.

Healing items frequently get used (unless magic healing is more efficient). The buff/debuff type items tend to stay in my inventory forever or get sold.

I've been replaying Firered recently.

I saved my Master Ball for Mewtwo. Articuno and Moltres took an absolute eon to catch with Ultra Balls. I got lucky with Zapdos and caught it on the first ball.

I got to Mewtwo today. I thought "ah, I'll just throw Ultra Balls at it and let him take down a few of my Pokemon, whatever". Caught it at 50% health on the 3rd ball.

I guess I can use the Master Ball for Suicune, if I ever find it?

Even when I play a game where I can have literally infinite of the best items (either through cheating or grinding) I refuse to use them. I could seriously have a cheat code for infinite mega-elixirs and STILL refuse to use anything more than basic potions unless absolutely needed!

I save items, but use them when they are needed. Even in regular enemies. That being said, I will use more common items, or ones I can get easier first. Like in Legend of Dragoon, some healing items were limited. The problem with that game was the small amount of items you could carry at once...

I wouldnt worry about that. I did that once, where I tried to change how I used items. That run was a disaster compared to the first run where I hoarder items. Same with using money in Pokmon. I decided to use money for more than just more poke balls (of various strengths). And I was broke all the time...

I do this shit in Resident Evil games all the time.

"Ugh! Another herb. Let me run this back to the item box real quick."

And it's worse with ammo. If I've beaten the game before, though, I have more of an idea of where I can use more of my heavy-duty ammo.

Consider it this way: You didn't lose your money if you got beat up by some random AI trainer.

Can get pretty bad with it, definitely becomes a problem with games like Animal Crossing, and in SAO Fatal bullet I kept getting the overweight restriction quite often.
Since I kept about every gun I obtained in that game.
And quite a few other games as well.
As far as Pokemon goes its mainly Pokemon that I hoard and never release any of them no matter how I obtained them or how useless they maybe I'll keep them in the PC box forever.

I've always wanted to have a final boss be a master thief, to the point where they use your own items against you... better think about holding on to that megalixir carefully

I hoard items like this even in games like Tales that have an easily-reachable cap on how many of each item you can hold.
