16 y/o Paul Miller III from Texas said his high school violated his religious freedom by FORCING him to SHAVE his MUSTACHE in order to take his exams!!

He's a student at Dawson High School in Pearland and school officials told him over the last 2 months that his mustache is a violation of the DRESS CODE but he told them "I can't shave, i'm a messianic jew, it's part of my religion"

He was told to submit a letter from his parents for a religious expemption which was turned in to the principal but they REJECTED the letter

And when he tried to take his exams, he was told by an admin he needed to abide by the code first as the woman said if he shaved, he would get his exemption..so he went to the nurse's office and got his mustache cut off

Paul said "I kept telling her i was told to shave but i dont' want to do it, i was trying to work something out, apparently i couldn't. They don't respect that and that's horrible"

As spokesman said it is absolutely false that the nurse shaved his mustache and said he did it of his own choosing and also claimed they didn't get an exemption letter but admit that male students MUST be clean shaven, well groomed and not have any facial features.

The family is now demanding an apology as this same district had a principal using a permanent marker to FILL IN a shaved hairstyle on a male student and the district was sued

A similar incident occurred in New Jersey where referee Alan Maloney told 16 y/o Andrew Johnson to cut his braids or be disqualified that showed a woman cutting off his hair before the match that caused a firestorm

Not really, messianic "Judaism" is some weird blend of Judaism and Christianity that only just popped up in the last few decades. Neither Jews or Christians like them and there are very few of them actually around.

Literally nothing.

Shit, I have employees that are exempt from working on Sundays because they're Catholic, employees that are exempt from shaving because they have a note from a dermatologist that says their skin is too sensitive, and employees with visible tattoos that are exempt from wearing long sleeves to cover them during the summer months because they have a note from a doctor saying they overheat too easily.

But they have a legal document that says that they are exempt, that's all it takes.

Legalistic morality is a terribly lazy way to approach such matters. More often than not (especially when it comes to schools), dress codes are completely arbitrary, with no practical consequences for violating them beyond whatever punishment has been arbitrarily attached to that violation. To prioritize that over a religious belief (which are often similarly arbitrary, but a central component of how one lives one's life and therefore more meaningful at a personal level) is just silly. Requiring him to shave to be a firefighter or work in some other job that requires respirator use? Sure. That's a practical reason. But here, there's nothing beyond "do it because I said so" from a handful of school administrators who are throwing their weight around.

Well yeah. It's not like breaking a dress code would effect your ability to do school things or even work most jobs. Still it's in place and deliberately breaking it is accepting you'll be punished and thus he was. Sorry but "because my religion said so" isn't a free pass for me but more importantly isn't for this school.

Some see it as being untidy however if kept tidy it shouldn't be a issue in most cases. Folk with facial hair and/or hair not kept well working in food though would be a issue due to the hairs that could possibly end up in the food. Of course this isn't a problem if folk take the right steps.
