Not photographers. They get super pissy if you even imply that you can take good pictures with a phone camera.

Anyone got the Sony a7R II or the a7R III?

Thinking of getting the 2 unless the 3 is much more of an improvement, seeing that it's almost double the price.

I don't have either but I've played with both. III is basically a cool QoL upgrade and an upgrade to the autofocus. Image quality is essentially the same, just upgraded bells and whistles. If I were purchasing one I would go with the II and nice glass.

Why are you upset at a smart phone with nice cameras? why does that seem to bother you so much? These days people like to take pictures and videos. And I honestly don't understand why that bothers people either...."JUST LIVE IN THE MOMENT UGH!". Taking a picture of something isn't preventing me from enjoying the moment. My family all together has hundreds of old VHS tapes of me and my cousins growing up. Would you have yelled at my dad and uncles for taking those videos of us and tell them to "Live In the Moment!"....I'm glad they took them. now i have them preserved and its fun to go back and look at them... /rant.

Did you get to try out the video function as well (at least on the II)?

Currently using a camcorder (Sony CX260V, which only does HD) for filming bird/wildlife. Was on a budget at the time, but served it's purpose 90% of the time as there's enough light.

Of course the II & III will be a major improvement, but is there anything in particular that stands out (if you noticed)?

I vacationed in Italy a few months back and I used my phone's full bag of camera tricks (wide angle, telephoto, night mode, super slo motion, super steady mode, etc).

I could get the shot and video I wanted in about 90% of use cases. They sure came in handy, let me tell you.

and even then, even if it is just instagram pics and pics of friends for memories...wouldn't you want them in top quality? Aside from price of the phone, i'm not seeing why this seems to bother people lol. If i go somewhere interesting or get some food that looks good i'd rather the picture come out nice and not semi-ok quality just because it was taken with a phone.

Yep, travelling abroad and trying to get around, you don't want to carry much more than this and cameraphone photos are more than decent enough to preserve the memories. I love my DSLR and lens, but realistically it's a hassle to bring when you're touristing around town and walking everywhere.

They say the best camera is the one you have with you.

Smartphone cameras have come a long way in the last decade, or even the last 5 years. You have a device that can capture 960 FPS, HDR video, and 4K resolution that you can carry around in your pocket.

Not enough to warrant the price difference imo. To put it plainly, you'll get more out of the II with nice glass than you would with the III and affordable glass.

I'm not certain but I think the III can reach up to 120 fps while the II gets up to 60. Not sure if that makes a difference for you. Both film 4k.

Pretty much. That being said, even with all the clever processing tricks and improved lens, they are still no match for a proper camera with good glass, large sensor, etc... even today, I still look at my iPhone XS Max vs my amateur DSLR (Canon EOS 200D aka Rebel SL2 in the US) and the DSLR smashes it everytime. Little things like the speed at which it can focus/take photos and take burst photos make a huge difference even in point and shoot mode, before you start to consider playing with the aperture and shutter speeds, etc... and of course, different lenses for different purposes. The downside to all that is just the size and hassle of it all which for candid photography, isn't great, but if you can plan ahead a little and set it up beforehand, you will get amazing shots.
