The bulk of the blame still goes to Abrams and his bullshit nostalgia wankery in TFA, and regressive world building like ~~blowing up the~~ ~~entire republic~~ to justify rehashing the Empire with Diet Palpatine, but Johnson did fuck all to move the story forward. And the intellectually self-satisfied posturing just drives home how shallow his approach was. "Hey, the Resistance buys its war machines from the same sellers that the First Order buys from! This certainly says...something about war. Now let's brush that under the rug and never think about the morally questionable aspects of conflict again!" >_> If any of his morally ambiguous "the good guys fuck up, the bad guys aren't all bad, kill the past, but really don't" meandering actually has something to say about this story or any of the characters, it might have been decent. But every single character ended up exactly where they were at the start of the movie, (or in Luke's case, where he already ended up in RotJ), and the plot ended with a lame stalemate where the Resistance had to retreat, and now was ~~even smaller.~~Which might have been compelling if the movie wasn't a boring space chase and actually showed the dwindling resources beyond faceless spaceships. >_> In the end, the good guys are still good, the bad guys are still evil, and despite supposedly being BTFO'd by the First Order, the movie ends to reassure us there is no tension, the Resistance will rebuild, everything is fine. Every director considers themsevle artists and will refuse to carry on off another's work. They just have to be different and show off their own style. And the result is this disjointed mess. So, Johnson went to JJ during The Force Awakens and asked that the ending scene with Luke be changed to suit his own movie. Instead of having Luke meditate surrounded by floating rocks, something that was promised to actor Mark Hamill, we instead got Rey presenting Luke with his father's lightsaber. BUT when Colin Trevorrow asked Johnson to change the ending of TLJ so that Luke lived, Johnson refused and Trevorrow was removed due to "creative differences." And let's not forget how Rian defends his movie by attacking fans and saying he made TLJ for himself. So, this pretty much means that Johnson (to an extent) took control of the entire trilogy. Not to mention how he rewrote characters to fit despite their established personalities in other works (even Holdo got screwed over by this). corneliusmagus 12/17/19 11:10:18 PM #37:	It's really quite sad that when Disney produces an exciting, visually spectacular film that gives depth to a series that although good mostly lacked it people will go crazy calling it the worst movie ever. But they churn out dull and offensively bad slop in the MCU and people celebrate it. Weird world. Also apparently I'm not a real Star Wars fan because I love The Last Jedi and think it's the second best movie in the franchise (Empire being number one). I guess all that time I spent reading the books, repeatedly watching the films as a kid, playing with the toys, having excited discussions with my childhood friends about it, playing the games just doesn't count because I think Luke had great and logical character development.
