I liked American Beauty but definitely liked Sixth Sense more.

American Beauty deserved best picture but imo M Night Shyamalan should have won best director.

edit: I take that back, I just looked at the nominees in 2000. Spike Jonze should have won best director for Being John Malkovich :/

great year for movies!

Ive never seen Shakespeare in Love but I think Saving Private Ryan is the best war movie ever

for some reason I have a feeling Harvey Weinstein has something to do with Shakespeare winning those Oscars. Theres a couple theories and rumors that Weinstein used to bribe / pay for oscar wins

Gwyneth Paltrow also won the Oscar for that movie, and she thanked Harvey in her speech. Even though 15 years later it would be revealed that he sexually harassed her

A plastic bag blowing in the wind is definitely a beautiful thing, particularly in a state with a regressive tax on bag put in place by a rich asshole who probably never shopped for groceries in his life.

Not really. Sixth Sense was good, but not particularly amazing.

MNS getting an Oscar just feels wrong.

I was forced to watch it 10 years ago as part of a bullshit "sociology" class.

It is basically Critical Theory rolled into a film, and pure filth.

Theyre both great movies, but Sixth Sense deserved it because of how it got Hollywood in a giant tizzy after the script was bought, and the drama behind M Night staying as director came to light.

Basically, Bruce Willis got to take his pick of any of Disneys upcoming projects, and instead of taking any of the sure things, he REALLY loved the script for Sixth Sense and picked that.

Michael Eisner was the CEO of Disney at this point in time, and Williss interest meant that the budget for the film would have to be inflated to accommodate the star, and he tried to do a bunch of loopholes to get a more experienced director. BUT M Night already had it in his contract that he HAD to direct it, so Eisner has to relent, but he was very much not happy about it, like most of the stuff in the later years of his tenure.

To put into perspective how bad he had gotten, keep in mind that he thought Pirates of the Caribbean 1 would fail miserably.

I didn't enjoy it. My (now ex) wife and I watched it with another couple, and it was a disaster from the start. She kept telling us how great it was days in advance and we're going to love it. LOVE IT!! Her husband was a racist homophobic asshole who immediately started making obnoxious comments. He also clapped and yelled "Fuck yes, tittes" during the one scene. Because that's the cool thing to do?

My ex wife would ask for me to explain things about every 30 minutes, especially about the bag. Her friend told us how it's such a great movie and it gets better about 10 times.

I tried watching it again on my own about 5 years ago and I was almost as bored the first time. But that may be attributed to the awful 1st time

It is weird to think that Shymalan was once viewed as being a promising up-and-comer. Granted, I'm not sure anybody thought *that* highly of him even at that point.

I know, the joke is the fact that it would be considered by the law to be child porn if you had topless pics of underaged teens, but for some reason its okay in a Hollywood movie. Ive never understood why.

youve got a point but Im sure they use an actress thats at least 18, and in reality teenagers see each other naked all the time
