I don't think MGS2 was ever hated. I was around when it came out.
People were just dissappointed they didn't get to play snake the whole game, but they still liked the game.

critics liked it but fans went nuts, they got mad at the whole playing as raiden thing. then it seems like the game was swept under the rug after MGS3 came out and i didnt hear anything about MGS2 until just a few years ago

You will either love it or hate it, and you'll know about 10 hours or so into the game. I personally think it's 100% worth $35. If you're able to return it, like via gamestop or somewhere, then do that just to be safe.

It not gonna be $20 after Christmas.

I was at Gamestop yesterday with my cousin. My cousin was asking about the Death Stranding poster they were taking down. It lead to a conversation where they all circled jerked about how they didn't like the game. So I threw in my 2 cents of "I loved it. Put 85 hours into it". The one guy just looked at me with a blank face and then went back to what he was doing. I did throw in that I understood the issues people had with it. But they completely wrote me off, cause no one directed conversation my way during the whole exchange.

He was asking about the poster for me, I guess. He told me when we left. They took down his number.

Buy it if you like exploratory game design. Don't buy it if you often find yourself unable to enjoy games that don't fit into a certain structure. I.E. if you need a certain amount of action and fast pacing in games, or commonly refer to critically acclaimed games as "boring" or "tedius" skip it.
