I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a game as much as Sonic Mania, and I just want more, ya know?

I think there's a decent chance of it. It sold pretty well and was the best reviewed Sonic game in some time.

Sounds like a lot of the developers have gone their separate ways, so if it does happen it wont be made by the same team

Yep. I think a couple people from the Sonic Mania team went with Whitehead to form a new studio, while Stealth had that Kickstarter for Vertebreaker which looked fantastic but was never funded.

SEGA seemed pretty happy with Mania's success so there will probably be another, but people should temper their expectations.

maybe the single most defining characteristic of modern sonic game development is that instead of iterating on ideas to refine and smooth them out, sonic team throws everything out and starts fresh with each new project

That's what I love about Sonic tbh and why it still maintains relevance today. If it was still a Mario competitor it would've been dead 20 years ago.
