Moderates on both sides are finding more common ground, much to the aggravation of the toxic extremes.

And it's kind of ironic, because the divisive rage and embarrassing antics of those extremes are a big part of what's pushing moderates closer...

eh, I'm not sure about a shift to the right, more a split in the left. I've been saying for years that the left wings in the western world haven't been fighting the right wing, they've been fighting the slightly-less-left wing a whole lot more. And the way most of our electoral systems work, that split vote just kills their chances dead.

Not exactly. I think that what's going on is a little different: a generalized failure to communicate between the wings over the last several decades is at last breaking down, and the flood of built-up resentment and frustration has us at each other's throats.

The breakdown is not over yet, and sadly, things will probably get worse before they get better.

There was a pendulum swing to the Right in the early 1980s -- a time when most people who'd been alive and in their early twenties during WWII were still only in their early sixties.
