Putting Fallout 76 specifically aside, it's actually just fine to play third person action games with a focus on melee with a controller even on PC. Xbox controllers are more or less a plug-and-play item for Windows.

I play FPS games with a controller on occasion because I hate having to sit up and sit a certain way for KB+M. Fallout New Vegas definitely feels better with KB+M though, so I'm assuming it's the same way with 76.

If you play in third person then controller is preferable. Keyboard and a mouse for third person shooters, driving games, platformers, and ... heck pretty much the only genre thats good on kbm is fps

And RTS games; especially when they have a good control scheme that lets you chain orders and actions as naturally as typing.
