What gets me about it is that NFL pretty much dethroned MLB as America's sport... but then again, baseball is a worldwide sport, so maybe that's how they get the revenue to pay guys like that.

Russell Wilson gets 35 million per year and plays 1/10 of the games as baseball players. Even though a pitcher will pitch 32 games in a good year that's still twice as much as NFL. So, there's a lot more air time for MLB and there are also twice as many players on an NFL roster.

Yep, no salary cap in MLB. Never has been.

If anything, baseball needs a salary floor to force cheap-ass teams like the Marlins to spend their money actually improving the team and not constantly fielding shitty teams and turning a profit despite their stadiums being half empty.

Russell Wilson's contract is also only for 4 years and isn't fully guaranteed.

Gerritt Cole could literally blow his arm out on Opening Day and never pitch again and he'd still get every single dollar of this contract.

$36,000,000 per year or... $3,000,000 per month or... $100,000 per day or... $4,166.66 per hour or... $69.44 per minute or... $1.15 per second...

Dont they have medical exemptions for things like that? Like if he really cant pitch they can get some back?

Like Prince Fielder.

Obviously they have insurance that would actually end up paying for it, but the contract would still end up counting against them for things like the Luxury Tax.

E: The insurance only pays part of it, sounds like half? I think the Rangers still have to pay Fielder $24M out of pocket for one more year, with them getting a $9M rebate from whoever they insured the contract with, and $6M from the Tigers to cover what they owe per year.

Don't worry. It's only a pitcher...What could go wrong!?!
I'm not saying I hate it, but 9 years is too long.

In Cashmen we trust I guess.

Yes, I know that Scherzer and Verlander are the exception and not the rule.

My point still stands. People said the same shit about Scherzer. If the Yankees get 2+ WS rings out it, theyll be happy. And considering their biggest problem last year was SP (outside of all the injuries they had), Im sure theyre ok with the risk involved.

Insurance pays $9 million a year of it since he "retired" (technically on 60 day DL). Tigers were paying $6 million a year as part of the trade for him to the Rangers. Rangers cover rest out of pocket.

And if they win some WS's with Cole, they'll make back what they invested and more.

2+..it'll take more than one opener for that...

I mean it's not my money so I really don't care.
I even thought last season was fun tbh.
And who know what it might have been like had the Astros not cheated.

But anyway...Starting pitching has been a glaring issue.
But Chapman, the closer giving up really stupid shit doesn't help either.

I believe the Rangers technically transfer him $24M then get $9M from the insurance company and $6M from the Tigers. I don't think the Tigers are paying Fielder directly, but that's just splitting hairs and not completely relevant.

And Fielder isn't on the 60-day DL anymore, the Rangers actually fully released him after their season ended in 2017 because they needed the roster spot in 2018. They had to work out the terms of that $9M reimbursement by the insurance company before they did it.

60 day DL doesnt take a roster spot, which is why people get transferred to it.

I mean Severino missed basically all of the season. Him + Cole + Paxton are a good 1-3, especially for the playoffs.
