I wish he would have cut back on the Shallan, and even Kaladin pages in favor of some of these other characters. The final act was awesome.

See, I actually thought Shallan was one of my favorite parts of the book, I'm amazed how well Sanderson handles mental illness, easily being the best mainstream author I've read regarding that.

Fun fact: I actually discovered that series because I met the author at a signing for Sanderson. I wish I enjoyed it more, because the author is an incredibly nice person :(

I agree with you guys that Steris got really fantastic in Bands of Mourning.

Which makes me curious--how did you all feel, generally speaking, about Shallan in Oathbringer? Her storyline in it was really weird to me, and I'd say it's the only thing that would bring the book down for me. I'll be starting a reread soon so maybe when I read Oathbringer for a second time I'll feel differently.

Shallan was one of my favorite parts of Oathbringer. It was a refreshing and welcome difference for me, and I love how Sanderson handles mental illness.

Lol yeah, IIRC there was concern when he was writing it that it would be physically impossible to print due to its length.

The company who prints his book, couldn't print the original draft due to it's length. He had to cut it down.

I didn't find her parts to be particularly notable. They felt about the same as the part of the book it was in.

IIRC(unless that's a different story than I know) it wasn't that the company couldn't do it, it was that he was an unknown author and they weren't willing to commit to such a huge endeavor for him, so instead he did Elantris then Mistborn to prove himself.

The Night Angel Trilogy is also a good series.

I did like Night Angel, although the villains were kinda cartoony and on occasion it would try a little too hard to be edgy. Overall solid series. I checked out Brent Weeks' other series, Lightbringer and it was pretty good but the pacing started to drag for me and I stopped reading after book 3.

It will be interesting to see how Weeks's return to the Night Angel world works out after his experience with Lightbringer. He's a better writer now, but is much more susceptible to bloat. I hope he can get a solid outline in place for the NA followup.

1328 pages in paperback.

That is just insanity! It's like 4 or 5 books in one.
Yes, it is. And it may help to approach it like you're reading a series rather than a single book. Here's what Brandon has to say about how he plots the Stormlight Archive books:

For those who don't know, I plot each Stormlight book as a trilogy written as a single novel (though in five parts) with a short story collection spliced into it. That "trilogy" then connects to the five book mini arc (in this case, the first five books) which in turn ties into ten book mega arc of the series.

It's a different story. I'm talking about the original draft of Oathbringer being to long for the company to print in a single paperback book.

I'm not a fan of shallan. In the first books, the whole "I'm so smart with my witty jokes and puns" annoyed me.

It was lol. It does seem to be a conscious thing at least, since Jasnah called her out on that very thing. I enjoyed her story a lot more in WoR but then in OB, I don't know. I do get part of it is mental illness for sure, but then it also feels like a big portion of what was going on was magical in nature and it just felt very extreme. It was just really confusing for me mostly.

I love Shallan, and part of why she's one of my favorite characters is precisely the various disconnects between how she views herself and how she really is.

It in the first book, I really felt her humour was supposed to come across, as genuinely unfunny.

Perdido, I've heard it's an amazing, unique and weird dark fantasy occasionally bordering on horror.

Jade City is a martial arts/gangster hybrid set in a fairly contemporary but fictional society.

It is all of those things. Maybe not the strongest in plotting at the end of the day, but the setting and writing more than make up for it.

Called The Red Knight, first book of the Traitor Son Cycle series by Miles Cameron. I'm still really early in it and not sure how to feel so far, but I hear it gets really good and that he writes excellent combat scenes.

I read the first first three books and had mixed feelings. At times I really loved it, and at other times I struggled. I personally did not enjoy the combat but I know it's supposed to be a highlight.

Book 3 was great but some of my favorite storylines came to an end with it. I had also heard that book 5 was mostly all action and I personally didnt care for the battle scenes much.
