Somehow he got it into his enormous head that just because he can point a camera he must also naturally be a good writer, and that even though he fundamentally hates comic book characters, that he can write a good comic book movie. His best movies were ones where he directed but didn't touch the screenplay (Watchmen) or had a team of writers to keep him true to the source material (300).
