Is this really a thing we're supposed to be doing now? Latino is offensive because it implies a gender, so let's make up a word ending in x?

Don't worry, we'll just change the whole language to be gender neutral. Muy bien!

I've seen a lot of people using that shit in Portuguese and I vehemently refuse to do so. There are also people who'll use @ for the gendered inflection, such as "amig@s" for "friends".

Because "You seem upset" doesn't really translate well to Spanish and I originally had "molesto", which translates more closely to "annoying" than "angry".

Anyway, it's just shorthand. No one's forcing you one way or another.

I don't mind if the population of LGBTQ people want to label themselves as that but it's not going to be fully accepted or appropriated in the community anytime soon. Spanish is too culturally and historically ingrained as a gendered language.

All Romance languages are. To change them at such a fundamental level is to change the language.

It's just shorthand to use on social media, where characters tend to be at a premium.

Other languages have undergone shifts like this, like Swedish, Danish and yes even English. It wasn't specifically because of transgender rights or anything, it was just to clean the language up.

So it's definitely not outside the realm of possibility for a language to just get rid of that.

Because the -o ending is almost exclusively reserved for masculine nouns.

Another difficult thing here is that Spanish is so the main language of many, many countries, so there'd be no easy way to standardize a change like that across all of them, since they have different governments, different cultural values, etc.

"Latinx" is instantly recognizable and while I'm sure a lot of people don't agree with it, it is easy to understand.
