See, I see no sources to back up.the claim that "undetectable levels" is a guarantee that it is not transmitted. And why would someone then need to keep using medication? That seems extremely contradictory.

Basically they are asking parents to play Russian roulette. It at least seems morally wrong, because there is a reason you are still HIV positive, else you could just donate to any sperm bank, not exclusively a HIV positive one. That alone is extremely questionable for me.

Even if there is a 1% chance your unborn could have AIDS, it is completely disgusting to take that kind of risk with your unborn child's life.

We have long established medicine that makes HIV little more than a nuisance in peoples lives, but the biggest problem for people with HIV is how fearful everyone else is around them. If you want to talk about disasters, start with that one.

As it happens, I have a friend who is a researcher in reproductive science and works at a sperm bank - I asked her what she thinks about this

Sounds like its not really a sperm bank but more matching service for people to use a known donor as opposed to being recruited as HIV altruistic donors (would be allowed due to regulation). Im all for it! Undetectable is untrasmittable, but the laws often take time to change. They have found a loophole so Im all for it!

In other words, it's not like a blind sperm donation.

why bother going to a sperm bank openly advertised as HIV positive, when you can go to other ones that routinely screen contaminated samples out? that choice can have little to do with fear of contamination and more on just basic logic related to availability...

"option A provides samples from HIV positive donors, BUT WE SWEAR THERE'S NO RISK OF PASSING HIV TO CLIENTS OR NEWBORNS!"

"option B doesn't have to deal with any of that because HIV positive samples are not even kept in the first place"

I understand people's reservations because HIV is serious business, but get your facts straight first. Undetectable = untransmissable. Untransmissable = no HIV for you, or anyone.

In Australia, it may be different, but here in the USA most aren't going to be able to afford the meds to keep them alive because of our shit healthcare and we have people over here downplaying it too. It's madness. No, it's not the death sentence it once was and transmission rates can be lowered, but it's still a life changing thing and shouldn't be taken lightly.

I don't think anyone is seriously suggesting that getting HIV is no big deal (at least, I'm not). The point though is to remove the stigma that you shouldn't stand within 30 foot of someone with HIV, which is unfortunately where a lot of people seem to be at still.

Medicine has come far enough that people who don't have HIV can be in sexual relationships with HIV positive people and be unaffected. Undetectable = untransmissable is the official CDC position on this.

Because that is factually correct?

An HIV positive person who is on the right treatment will not transmit "a little bit of HIV" to a partner. Like they have done many comprehensive studies on this and found that in swathes of numbers there's not even a margin of chance.

I understand why people might have reservations about actually using that sperm bank but ultimately it needs to be understood that there is literally 0 risk when somebody's levels are that low.

Imagine getting married and on your honeymoo. your wife says no to sex and has you sit down to show you promotional material for a HIV positive sperm bank and how she thinks it is a good idea.
