Lack of body language, facial expressions, voice inflection, compounded by a layer of anonymity in a sea of other users that makes it hard to get familiar with other users.

Added to this humanitys predeliction to project their current understanding of an issue onto someone elses statement, in an environment where all information blends together on the Internet as a whole, while being simultaneously fragmented in various sub-communities, means that you could end up with two people who agree with each other arguing for hours because they both misinterpret the context of the others position.
