My original thought was that it would literally be a one piece swimsuit, but after 20 years that would be a pretty stale punchline.

In fact it's been so long now I don't know what could be not lame. Is it gonna be some existential concept, like the spirit of friendship or adventure or whatever?

I have been looking for an excuse to get into One Piece. It's just easier for me to watch dubbed anime as I can do other things while it's on. It's on Hulu+ subbed.

Honestly I reckon this is it. There are so many gags like that in the story, it's possible that's what he intended this to be back when he started writing it. Maybe he intended to finish it off in a year or two.

The hardest part is that the first 30 episodes are lame and the animation is like, Dragonball Z quality for the first like...250 episodes.

Seems stupid to tell someone to stick out 30 fucking episodes before it gets good though, but it really does. It went (in my estimations) from "what is this stupid shit" to "Naruto and Bleach authors must be crying at their complete lack of depth right now".

Probably this, but tied in with the whole 'spirit of the journey' kind of stuff. Only the true king of the pirates would find it funny and appreciate the adventure it took to get there.

Interesting, thanks. I tried getting into the series but stopped at around 26, feeling it was taking way too much time to actually get interesting. Maybe I'll power through to see how it is at 30+.

There's actually an abridged movie that goes through the entire first 30 episodes in under 2 hours, might be worth checking out as it's also good animation.

In fact I believe they're making abridged movies for more or less the entire series.

I haven't seen it though so someone else might be able to weigh in.

Author confirmed that one piece would indeed be a physical item and not a metaphoric one like what your talking about.

That's just it though. Not everyone has the patience for 90s shonen. I know I struggled. Some of my friends struggled. It's a slow start for sure.

To add to this, if you don't know One Piece and its sense of character, then the idea of a dumbass protagonist in a stupid hat who stretches his arms like a rubber man is honestly very stupid and unappealing.

I sat through 500+ episodes because my friend really wanted me to like it. The horrendous pacing destroys everything enjoyable about the show IMO. It was painful while binging, I can't imagine what it's like for longtime fans watching it on a weekly basis for nearly 20 years.

One thing that makes me sad now is that there's less of that golden camaraderie now, or at least it seems that way. So many characters in the crew that each has been flanderized to their base gimmicks a little more.

There is absolutely no reason to watch the anime after Enies Lobby. That's when the "Oh shit we're catching up to the manga" attitude takes over and everything slows to a snail's pace. The manga keeps the pacing going, even if there are still some long arcs.

I think I watched past Fishman Island. I want to check out the manga as I do like the early Dragon Ball adventure feel the show has, but I feel like the black and white artwork isn't suited for such a colorful cast.
This will probably a travesty to fans...I got the most enjoyment out of its story and cast playing Pirate Warriors 3.

Out of the shonen battle manga its definitely the best. Its has everything you could want out of a series like this. Awesome fights, good humor, cool worldbuilding, a sense of adventure and a fair amount of tragedy. Its really entertaining, especially if you read through the manga quickly instead of watching the anime

that is... not true

while not all the characters have that much time on the page (especially post-timeskip), they still seem largely consistent.

sanji and usopp have both had cool character growth moments, and Franky won a fight by suplexing his opponent into subrission. what more do you want?

That's exactly it. Less time on page = less of that golden camaraderie I was talking about. It feels a bit more like each character only has time to get out their gimmick sometimes.

It is pretty much this. Except in a better more physical way. Everything in the world that the King of the Pirates finds is One Piece. Because wherever the King of the Pirates goes, everything and everyone belongs to him, just based on how he acts. Which is why Luffy is already the King of the Pirates.

It's based on what Gold Rogers says in every episode. "I left everything I own in one piece." Because everywhere he goes everything is his. And he just leaves it alone, in one piece without messing with it.

Isnt it like one place though? Even when I watched it subbed I never read it say "that place". I think it still fits. Also why would the show even be called One Piece then? Pretty sneaky sis.

And it's weird that I still here the 4kids intro when I think of Gold Rogers despite watching way more of the funimation version.

No reason to do yourself the disservice of time slot padding and filler on a series of its sheer scale.

Padding issues aside I think the comedy pops better with the amazing voice actors they've got going on. And the music is great.
