Board 8 > Death Stranding is the dumbest game I've ever played.

So I start the game up, and watch a cool little cutscene that gets me decently hyped. "Heck yes, this will be the spiritual successor to MGS for sure!"

And then I start walking.

For fifteen minutes. I just walk.

And then I watch a forty minute cutscene that makes no sense.

Then I wake up.

Then I walk some more.

Then I watch another forty minute cutscene.

The I walk while carrying something.

Then I run from monsters.

Then I walk.

Then I watch an hour long cutscene.

Then I watch Norman Reedus wink at the camera and take a shit.

Then I walk.

Quite the contrary, I'm not complaining about the length. I'm complaining about how boring they are in conjunction with how dumb the story is. And when it's long and dumb, boy does it suck.

I loved MGS and loved its long cutscenes. Because they were interesting.

I could count the number of forty minutes cut scenes in the first three MGS games on one hand. People seem to forget that those games had good pacing.

It's pretty bad. Don't get me wrong, it has some redeeming qualities such as looking beautiful, a clever online system, and solid to great performances by pretty much all the cast.

But the actual act of playing the game is so bad. Calling it a slog might be an understatement as to how slow and painful it is to play. The story is also typical Kojima nonsense but at least the MGS games had a consistent through line. This just seems like Kojima trying to say something to us but what he's saying is gibberish.

it's peak Kojima, a game where he's finally the white guy delivering packages to people all over the country basically an analogy for him as a developer releasing games to his fans and in the process connect them to each other through their shared experiences

all those dropped packages on the road? all those materials lying around and you can't carry them all? they are an analogy for all the features he can't include in his games because of budget and time

Death Stranding is going to go down in history as the greatest game of this millennium

I will always advocate for returning games you don't like!

I will say that in this game, similar to dying light, your character starts off so inept and powerless that it feels unfair

Once you unlock a few critical upgrades, the game magically becomes fun

Everyone I know has complained about this. My friend who has actually finished the game complained about the final quarter as well, but I'm not there yet

I could maybe understand the complaints if you had played this day one and tried to avoid any trailers or something, but the game's been out three weeks now. Even if you were only half paying attention, that's plenty of time to find out at least what the basic gameplay loop involves before buying it.
