l read that a couple of weeks ago. It's really good, darkly funny and very disturbing. I wrote some blog posts about it trying to review it but just ended up writing weird poetry.

Reading Gyo now. Hope its good. I remember reading one story about a woman peeling her face to appear younger. So creepy lol

Also, while I like Uzumaki, I thought the initial chapters were way better, when it was just like 1 or 2 people affected by the spirals. Once it became everyone it go too unbelievable and less creepy. But it was very good throughout regardless I loved it

the scary part about uzumaki is when you really think of the ending

the heroine is narrating all the events that happened to her
but by the end of the story she was turned to stone so if she is narrating the story by memory that mean she is still aware of all thats going on around her stuck unable to move or die for the rest of time. thats horrible

Yeah, I read Uzumaki like 14 years ago and loved the fuck out of it.

I read Gyo this past year, and it was just weird as shit. I loved the artwork and situations in it though, it just didn't have the depth or psychological chills that Uzumaki did imo.

That was a later chapter, yeah. It was a bit out of nowhere and after it was done everyone was like "welp, guess we should head to the denouement". Like there were two chapters after that where the protagonist learns some stuff but not a lot of stuff.

Junji Ito's works have a very appealing aesthetic. I enjoy all his stuff on a surface level. Really good at building a very eerie atmosphere/world. However, and maybe I misunderstand, but I thought he was a horror manga artist. I find nothing in particular of his scary. Definitely manages to make me feel uncomfortable but at most it's just that. To be fair I don't think I've felt anything more from any manga.

I know what he implied. He just didn't like that I honed in on the fear aspect. I understand that horror goes beyond whether or not something illicits fear as that's what he's trying to imply.

Gyos my favorite of his longer stories, if only because it keeps getting more ridiculous. With Uzumaki, even though a lot of the individual stories were great, the fact that most of it kept happening around the same girl and she STILL didnt leave the town sort of irked me.

it was implied that was part of the curse
it kept them from wanting to leave which is why the stronger the curse got the less and less people chose to leave the town

When i got to the part where i saw the tubes Inserted in the peoples mouths and their anus... so gross lol

Gyo probably made me more squeamish than Uzumaki. I agree with the poster above though that so far I like the short stories a bit more.
