Manga about 40-something mans relationship with daughters schoolgirl friend sparks controversy.

Major publishers promotion of Musume no Tomodachi has some saying the company is encouraging an illegal relationship with a minor .
Most of the bullet points for the premise of publisher

Kodanshas Musume no Tomodachi manga read like pretty typical anime/manga storytelling tropes. Hardworking but melancholy male protagonist Kosuke is sitting in a cafe one day when he spots some overly aggressive customers hitting on the new teenage waitress, Koto. After Kosukes quick and clever thinking saves her from the situation, Koto offers to thank him later, but he chivalrously declines. When the two unexpectedly bump into each other again in the hall at school, however, Koto asks him for his Line messaging app contact, and when he agrees to tell her, they begin a relationship that ends up affecting Kosuke on a deep emotional level .

But this isnt a school romance story, because while Koto is a high school student, and legally still a minor, Kosuke is man in his 40s, old enough to be Kotos father . As a matter of fact, Kosukes daughter is one of Kotos classmates, hence the title Musume no Tomodachi , which translates to My Daughters Friend.

Kodansha describes the series with:
Kosuke lived his life acting like an ideal man, as a father in the home and an executive in the office. But meeting his daughters friend Koto causes a 180-degree change in his life. When hes with Koto, he can be his true self, and his worn-down heart is healed, even as he knows this is an emotion that must not be embraced .
A present to people who suppress themselves in modern society, this is a middle-aged-man-meets-girl story.

It sounds like the premise of some porno where a young girl has sex with her friends dad and this author decided to make a plot out of a porno.

A 40 year old man getting with a 21 year old is fine, even an 18 year old but she should NOT still be in high school as that is some creepy ass shit.

In Musume no Tomodachi , Kosuke is a widower whos unhappy with the state of his job, and whos also being emotionally shut out by his teen daughter, so theres a chance that his relationship with Koto wont be about love or sex, but simply about how to cope with the isolation hes feeling while floundering with the traditional roles hes trying to fill.

A lot of female authors write/direct/etc. etchi stuff in Japan. A lot feminist theory stuff is pretty fringe here, so concepts like cultivation or the male gaze don't get talked about. But the older guy into underage daughter stuff is everywhere. Even Snatcher had it (removed from the US version I believe). Has a part where you sniff the panties of the underage daughter of your former partner and also watch her shower.

It sucks because I am really not into that stuff at all, but it's shoved into my face unexpectedly fairly often. I have also met guys who are open about their attraction to underage girls even in front of women and nothing was said to them, as though it wasn't a big deal.

In both cases (spoilres for both that movie American Beauty and Lolita) nobody is meant to be on the side of the man in addition in American Beauty Lester even realizes it himself when Angela says she's a virgin, he was under the impression that she was sexually active already based on what she said to Jane

Oh Im fully aware and while Im not familiar with this manga, it seems like the older man is not made to be a bad guy like in Lolita or a remorseful guy like in American Beauty.

With that said, it always irks me when a (presumably white) internet poster says something like Japan is so fucked or of course the rape was in India. Your own (presumably western) country is diverse and gets looked at with nuance. But India is Rapeland and Japan is Hentaiville

This shit is definitely fucking weird, the older guy is a creep for letting it get as far as it's gotten and the girl is kind of a psychopath

When they first met he didn't know she was actually in high school, ok still pretty weird but shit happens. Second time they met it was at his daughter's high school, for not dipping out right there the MC is a freakin creep. Afterwards he gets her phone number and continues to hang out with her even after she kisses him and pretty clearly says she loves him. He even skips out on work to run away with her at one point until he comes to his senses.

At one point he even gets a boner because she was holding his hand

The first half of Usagi Drop is fantastic. But yeah, the time skip is so bad it feels like it was written by someone else.

That's why the anime is the best version. No time skip.

Yep and that one was also written by a woman (and marketed to adult women). Japan is a place.
