another one. one of many, sadly.

https://www.cnn.com/2019/11/24/asia/goo-hara-kara-dead-trnd/index.html

The South Korean singer and actress Goo Hara was found dead on Sunday, Gangnam District Police in Seoul told CNN.

Police would not comment on a cause of death.

The 28-year-old singer, once part of the South Korean girl band Kara, was found unconscious in her Seoul home in May, after she had posted the word "Goodbye" on her Instagram account. The post, which was later deleted, prompted comments from concerned fans.

On that occasion, Goo was found and taken to the hospital. She later apologized to fans for "causing concern to everyone and causing a commotion,"

Terrible. Hara was a major part of Kara and one of the best Invincible Youth members.

Someone should probably punch her ex-boyfriend in the dick over and over again.

Because their fans won't let them be normal people, didn't some Jpop singer shave her head and apologize for having a boyfriend?

It's true.

Their managers and managing companies basically market them in a way that promotes them as an object that is "owned" by the fans, not a person.

Hell, it's not uncommon for groups to pretend that prior members never existed if they step down in less than ideal circumstances. Pretending not to recognize their names in interviews and such.

It's fucked.

It's true. It was Minegishi Minami from AKB48. It's more of a variety show girl group.

This actually wasn't her issue. She had rather successfully gotten through the girl group stage and was pretty successful.

Last year she got in an altercation with her ex-boyfriend who broke into her place started breaking stuff and attacking her. She scratched the fuck out of his face. Because South Korea has busted self-defense laws she got in a legal battle with him. All the while her name was being shredded in the media and she was fairly quiet about the whole matter. Then it comes out that her ex was blackmailing her with a sex-tape to try and keep her quiet. As it turns out South Korea also has dumb blackmailing laws. So the dude barely got in trouble. The whole thing kinda caused Hara's career to come to a halt.

She had attempted suicide earlier this year. The media response was sadly expected (a lot of people accusing her of being an attention whore). Then one of her best friends killed herself.

That's just pathetic, and the guy needs to be torn to shreds.

Physically or otherwise.

It's normal for korean boyfriends to be super possessive and violent
they even glorify it in k-dramas

Not gonna pretend to know who that was, and not a fan of K-pop, but it seems like a lot of people involved with it are killing themselves lately.

It'll be okay. Japan has machines that pump out generic J-Pop stars on a daily basis in case these types of things happen.

but it seems like a lot of people involved with it are killing themselves lately.

Seems logical to me. These bands are created by music companies who recruit and market the girls and control every aspect of their looks, sound, maneurisms and probably their diet. I have a feeling we'd be pretty appalled to see what they go through. I have no doubt this atmosphere is horrible to the girls who probably just feel like a piece of meat since that's how they're presented and seen. Every one of these girls look like an automatron who is completely the same as the last one. There's no way this stuff is healthy but folks support it because dumbasses love these garbage girl and boy bands, mostly for the sex appeal.

Of course. We've seen similar stories of bands in America, especially some of the groups in the 50s and 60s. Just young kids who want to be a star and are sold this bill of goods by some shady adult to get them to sign a contract. And, of course the kids and their families have no idea what they're getting into until it's too late.

Agreed. None of these are independent artists who are writing and publishing their own music. They're all just faceplates for corporate music created by algorithms. About as soulless as music gets.

Though, I've been saying that the music industry hasn't been about music for years. Just another example.

The irony of people bashing idol pop as if that's the solution.

It's certainly valid to criticize the industry, even some aspects of the culture. There are plenty problems that should be addressed. But just saying this whole thing is stupid and shouldn't exist isn't helping, if anything you're making it worse. In a way you're justifying everything that's wrong with it, as if it's to be expected.

In any case as commented previously Hara being an idol is incidental to her problems.

Again, a lot of it does come from the culture and society, unfortunately, and it's not particular to idol pop or even one country or another.

But I'll agree that the companies themselves encourage bad ideas and behaviors with their marketing and what have you. For sure.

Also I dunno if other KARA fans feel this way but I have several of their songs on my devices and it feels weird AF to listen to them now with Hara gone.

I haven't listened to Kara in a while but like Gheb was saying Kara and Hara in particular really were huge, she was a big part of that early thrust of Hallyu. I mean she was still just one girl, but yeah. It's also crazy to think that was 10 years ago. But yeah, it's weird.

On the other hand I mean, this is harsh but people commit a lot of suicide in Korea. Public figures aren't immune to it, on the contrary.
