Is there really anything to do besides the riverwalk

last time I was there that was the only thing I did outside of going to the events that were happening at the time (PAX South and Royal Rumble)

If you feel like driving an hour or so north, visit Fredericksburg. They had some good tourist stuff there (if Chocolat is still open then stop there for a bit), and definitely spend some hours at the National Museum of the Pacific War.

Definitely check out the Riverwalk - it'll be all nice and lit up for Christmastime and there's great food there.

Outside of that, if you like burgers, Chris Madrid's is a must.

The Alamo is kind of neat if you like history, but not to the point of spending a lot of time there - don't block out a whole day for it or anything.

And I second the Fredericksburg recommendation.

Six Flags

Red Lobster when Shrimpfest is up\Golden Corral\ Carls Jr.\KFC (none of these in my town)

I go to two comic book shops when I'm there, Heroes and Fantasy is the better one

Riverwalk, especially when an event is up

sporting events

Alamo drafthouse for a movie and a beer, good times with friends

Mall for out of town shopping

those are literally all of the reasons why I would go to SA

Yeah San Antonio is a pretty "normal" city with a big touristy area (the Alamo + Riverwalk). Not sure there is too much to do there, but I'm also only ever in town for PAX and to see friends.

That said, definitely go see the Alamo, it's a cool historical thing to do that also doesn't take too much time. There's also a knockoff Space Needle you can go to if you want to be super touristy, I guess.

If you aren't from Texas/the southwest you need to check out the regional food. I don't have specific taco recs but SA and Austin have beef for best tacos in Texas so it shouldn't be hard to find a good taco place. Tex mex is plentiful. As for barbecue, there is a shack I always visit called B&D Icehouse. Good as hell, reasonably priced, cheap beer. Get brisket. It's a short walk from Riverwalk/convention center down one of those semi-abandoned mid-gentrification areas. Some good stuff over there.

In general avoid the Riverwalk for food, though some of the pubs and bars are fine.

I do a yearly trip with a group of buddies as we try to see every MLB stadium in America. For Texas, we made it a mini-tour of Texas. Started by flying into Dallas/Arlington, rented a car, and spent one day in each city... Dallas/Arlington, Austin, San Antonio, Houston, back to Dallas to fly home.

For San Antonio, we did the Alamo and the Riverwalk (it really is just a large creek with restaurants/shops on either side), and mostly recovered from the previous night in Austin. When we left, we agreed that one day was enough for San Antonio... there really didnt seem to be much to do there.

A total of 23 stadiums, but some of those are repeat visits to teams that built new stadiums. Here is everything in order (and Im from Chicago, so Ive been to both Chicago stadiums a ton of times... particularly the White Sox, since thats my team):

Chicago Cubs - Wrigley Field (1989, many times since)
Chicago White Sox - Guaranteed Rate Field (1993, many times since)
Pittsburgh Pirates - PNC Park (2005, 2012)
Milwaukee Brewers - Miller Park (2005, many times since)
St Louis Cardinals - Old Busch Stadium (2005)
Cleveland Indians - Progressive Field (2005)
Kansas City Royals - Kauffman Stadium (2006, 2014)
Toronto Blue Jays - Rogers Centre (2006)
Detroit Tigers - Comerica Park (2006)
Minnesota Twins - Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome (2007)
Cincinnati Reds - Great American Ball Park (2008)
Atlanta Braves - Turner Field (2008)
Washington Nationals - Nationals Park (2012)
Baltimore Orioles - Camden Yards (2012)
Colorado Rockies - Coors Field (2012, 2014)
Minnesota Twins - Target Field (2013)
St Louis Cardinals - New Busch Stadium (2014)
Texas Rangers - Globe Life Park in Arlington (2015)
Houston Astros - Minute Maid Park (2015)
Boston Red Sox - Fenway Park (2016)
Philadelphia Phillies - Citizens Bank Park (2017)
Seattle Mariners - T-Mobile Park (2018)
Atlanta Braves - SunTrust Park (2019)

I still need to see the 5 California teams (As, Giants, Angels, Dodgers, Padres), Diamondbacks, Marlins, Rays, Mets & Yankees.
