Why do people like the teams they like? I can understand people liking certain teams if they are from your home town or something. But I know many people who love teams from places they never been.

I mean the players aren't from there most of the time and as the players change I don't see how someone can associate themselves with an always changing team with no roots to them.

Because they did good once so they want to see it again. It's like nostalgia or something.

When sports teams do well, they get more national television coverage. Some (especially younger viewers) then become attached to these teams because they get to watch them more often and they tend to stick with that team as the years go on.

You like the players on the team -- pro teams normally keep a core group of players for several years. Also could have a player that you followed in college, so you became a fan of their pro team.
It's your parent's team, so you follow along.
Cool colors/logo -- probably how a lot of little kids initially pick their team if it's not their local or parent's team.
Bandwagon.
It's your sibling's team's rival.

I liked Mario Lemieux as a kid, and penguins, so when I watched hockey I just went with that. Thats the only total disconnect one for me though. I usually go with some place where my family comes from. I usually pick my main team then a second non rival to cheer on, usually an underdog, to have more to enjoy.

The biggest factor for me was being outright given a Deion Sanders jersey in the 4th grade.

The Cowboys and Browns both sucked at the time, but I just sort of gravitated towards the Cowboys.

I grew up watching the players and teams. I played the same sports and wanted to be just like them.
