People love Star Wars.
Then came prequels. Less people loved star wars.
Then came new trilogy. Less still love it.
And on and on.

Look at Naruto. People like Naruto. It finished. Then all the sudden Boruto came and people not on board.

American comics tend to go on forever. Reboot after reboot.

Kinda the advantage manga usually has is it ends.
It has a goal in sight. Then done.

Then we got pokemon.
Love or hate SS, many were already saying 800+ pokemon is too many.

Also Mass Effect.

The shittiness of later sequels doesn't retroactively degrade prior titles. You can't go back in time and unenjoy a thing, after all.

Dragon Quest is about the only franchise that seems to be immune.
Maybe also Red Dwarf.

Nah they both bring a new generation of fans which more than makes up for people who disliked them. Without the new movies less people would bother watching the old ones too.

In general but its not a absolute. Zelda and Mario remain popular to this day. Personally there is not a mainline single player final fantasy I havent enjoyed, quality goes up and down here and there but ive enjoyed them all.

The Matrix is one of the best examples of how shitty sequels can actually ruin the original.

The all-time television example of a show ruined from being on too long is Dexter

To be fair thats a case of the original movie didnt complete the story. If a movie or game has a complete story sequels cant necessarily ruin it.

It did? I recall it leaving off with the bad guys still being around and all that. I dont consider that complete. It seemed obvious to me when i watched it the first time there would be a sequel.

It was open ending.

Neo became superman and searched people to free from the matrix.

Ah well I assumed there was going to be a sequel when I saw it. And hell I was a kid.
