I'm working on my laptop at Denny's and the guy said I can hang out in back and plug in my laptop, I point out that the outlet seems to be off, I mention how often lightswitches can control the outlets so maybe he could try flipping some of the nearby ones that are down. He goes over and starts flipping like every switch, including those that are tied to the normal restaurant lights. Like clearly the outlet isn't going to be tied to the restaurant lights, and clearly I meant just flip up the 2 of the 6 switches that were down to up.

Of course it was 1 of those 2 switches that was the issue, but the 30 seconds of him flicking the entire restaurant's lights up and down before I explained it to him made it kinda annoying. Next time I'll just pretend to go to the bathroom and flick the switch up myself.

Also, I asked that I have a few food items but not for another 10-15 minutes. He brings them out in like 5 minutes and says "the cooks didn't want it to get cold". And again, it's like clearly I meant for you to figure out approximately how long it takes to cook it and then wait to put in the orders with the cooks for like 5 minutes or whatever. It didn't have to be anywhere near perfect, just wait some minutes before firing it.

I don't know how he thought what I meant was "cook this food immediately then wait 10 minutes to bring it to me" as opposed to "fire this order in 10 minutes".

For what it's worth I'm going to tip crazy well because I hung out at this denny's a while, and I never was mean or anything to him at all, but still *facepalm*

Yeah, give the guy a break. He could have been really tired or had a hard day. Maybe you weren't as clear to him as you thought you were as well.

Unless your tips are downright GODLY dont be that guy who comes in alone, hangs out forever on your laptop and does stupid shit like Oh yeah heres my order but dont make it for ten minutes. If you arent ready to eat dont come in.

Also a lot of simple requests can really fuck up a waiters time management. Dont make things any more complicated than they need to be.

Dude was a bit goofy but you sound like a crap customer so whatever.

Also my restaurant has a panel with like 15 switches(not even counting the absolute mess of panels, switches and wires in the electrical room) and many arent labeled or specifically labeled. Decent chance he probably legit didnt know which switches did what and those switches are probably basically never touched except by the opener and closer. He may literally never had to even think about those before.

Tell him you're not ready and order it 10 minutes later. This is like Tommy Wiseau demanding hot water at restaurants. It's not "hard' but it fucks the whole system up.

Few things:
1. Clearly people are reading my post as much more angry than written, like it was silly interactions but I wasn't upset or anything, just like confused how the guy didn't get it
2. I wasn't taking up tables they needed for other people just hung out in the back
3. People spend long times like this in coffee houses I don't get why that's fine and this is bad
4. I only told him "food in like 10 minutes" because he wasn't checking in on me much at all and so when he did check in I told him then
5. The total for my food came to 12.13 and I tipped 12.87 I feel like 25 dollars total for the time to work there and the food was worth it for me, and considering that he didn't have to do much more work with me than he would a normal table, it was just spread out over a longer time I've got to imagine he's happy with that too.

How long did you wait before ordering to know it was going to be 20 minutes before he checked on you?

Also, how is it that the place isn't busy but it takes him forever to check on you?

Because I was in the section they weren't really using and I told him I'd just be sipping coffee and working on stuff, after he did his rounds with the normal people he did some other stuff or was just talking to his coworkers.

I was there at 1:48, I wanted a coffee refill like once at 2 something and then again at 3:05, by 3:05 he really never checked on me except once in the beginning and at 3:05 when I waved him down and he noticed me (which I was fine with). Because it took a couple minutes when I started trying to get his attention to when he actually noticed me I figured I'd order coffee refill now and then place the delayed order for food rather than trying to wave him down again in 8 minutes.

I didn't think it would be that big a deal to be like "can you wait 5-10 minutes before you fire this food?"

But they had extra tables, I wasn't in the way, I tipped really well, and people do that shit all the time at overpriced coffee places. So why is it wrong to do at Denny's?

I timestamp lots of what I do in a day on my laptop. So I sat down and I timestamped "Starting work" then I also timestamped when I started eating because I have a strict diet. I didn't timestamp when he checked in on me at 2 because that didn't matter much.

No worries, I'm actually not that organized but logging what I do in a day with something people advised would be good for me since I'm forgetful and have mental health issues.
