I DISABLED and had this shit lockdowned like a year ago when I built my PC, no problems with shady m$ apps running in the background... until now

Came back today to a startup screen saying Windows is updating or some crap

Ruined my fucking audio drivers and now my speakers aren't working

How the fuck

It is essentially impossible to disable automatic updates unless you are eternally vigilant. If you disable it it will get reenabled.

I had this shit disabled through services, metered connection, registry fixes, and other methods (that might not be TOS friendly)

Worked for a year and a half until now, but how??

Windows 10 is an evolving beast. Much in the same where tech guides from 2017 and earlier mostly no longer work with current Windows, Microsoft constantly changes the updating engine

Windows has a good habit of re-enabling shit and it is annoying as hell. I had an update once that blocked my computer from going into sleep mode, which was annoying as fudge.

I have one PC with Windows 7, and one with Windows 10, and Windows 10 is just better. The Windows 7 PC is older so that may affect things, but Windows 10 is just sleeker and nicer-looking. The only thing that makes Windows 7 better is the classic start menu, but you can download a program that will bring that to Windows 10.

Also they aren't updating Windows 7 anymore after January, so I don't know why you would want to keep Windows 7.

That's my number one gripe about it to be honest. I hate that the whole interface is designed around tablet view. You get used to it, but it does not look good, it looks like an incomplete DeviantArt theme. I just really wish they still had fucking Windows Classic or something built in.

I think they fixed it now, but for the longest time right-click context menus on items in the taskbar, and the whole Start bar itself, would just shit the bed and populate as blank items.

Also - why do they have different Settings screens? That is just another dumb decision right there. Half the time you go through a dozen screens to change an option just to realize it's not in *that* Settings menu, it's in the *other* Settings menu.

Microsoft themselves tell you not to install the latest updates sometimes. Every major update is an irrefutable travesty at launch.

It's almost as if they have a rogue AI developing Windows 10 and pushing this shit out.

An update about a year ago was deleting some people's personal data, and Microsoft knew about the bug. They pushed the update anyway, a bunch of people lost personal data after it automatically installed, Microsoft made a surprised Pikachu face and pulled the update. Their QA is atrocious, I would not trust a major Windows update today. I have 10 Pro so I can put myself on the release channel that's six months behind, but I think that's going away soon.

Therefore, we continue to recommend (unless youre an advanced user who is prepared to work through some issues) that you wait until the Windows 10 Creators Update is automatically offered to you

So don't ever click "check for updates" and just let Windows do its thing and there will never be a problem

I still have 7.

It wasn't really intentional; it just never upgraded like it was supposed to and I didn't particularly care.

Then again, it also hasn't done system updates correctly since like 2012 so that might be why.

I have Windows 10 Pro, and I disabled the automatic restart in multiple places, including group policy, and still it would restart to update, causing me to lose work. So I went nuclear on Windows, found the file that does the actual restart, corrupted it, then revoked all system permissions so that Windows could never fix it.
