For those of you who do not want to spend "$300" just rinse off your rice with water in a strainer 3-4 times, then put it in a bowel of water early in morning.

When you get home from work, just use a simple $10 rice cooker.

His $300 rice cooker added a timer to let it sit in water before starting.

That is the difference between it and the $10 one.

IMO the expensive models do not soak long enough for perfect rice. I find 8 hours is just right. They usually rush it at 1 hour, and don't use fresh water.

Finally an actual answer as to why a rice cooker would be more expensive than 40 bucks. Not that that feature sounds worth an extra couple hundred, but at least there is some reason. I asked in the other topic and was ignored

Like over the stove? Better quality of rice for less work. If you cook over the stove, you end up with burnt rice at the bottom. Even if you're constantly stirring, you'll still end up with tons of rice stuck at the bottom which is annoying to clean off. With a rice cooker, you can just set it and forget it.

Alright here's my two cents. People who usually say "Rice is so easy to cook on the stove, why do you need a rice cooker?!" are usually the people who have never used one, and that's okay.

Now i can't speak for the Instant pots that's trending now and how well they cook their rice, but my family always used Tiger brand rice cookers, i believe Zojirushi(sp) is comparable. They're usually under $100 depending on the size you purchase.

Cooking rice literally becomes just a "plug and forget" sort of thing. You measure/rinse the rice, measure the water and hit the button and forget about it.

Oh you forgot that you started it an hour ago? No problem, rice cooker has a "keep warm" setting that keeps the rice perfectly hot without making it all soggy. Keeps for hours.

Oh you're done with the rice but don't want to put it away yet? Unplug the rice cooker and leave it overnight. Next day, plug it back in, throw in a tiny bit of water, set it to cook again, and the rice will be nice and hot, and again will stay perfectly cooked.

Now i get that it's an extra appliance, but it's a godsend for people who cook rice often. I'm curious to see how the instant pot holds up to these stand alone rice cookers, so at least you could have different uses for it.

I've been making rice via rice cooker since I was a toddler. When I moved out of the house, one of the first things I wanted to buy was a rice cooker. Until I saw the prices. Then I learned how easily made rice can be made by putting it on the stove.

I also have more control over how it tastes. I've learned to season rice on stove top if I so choose.

As was said, rice is versatile. And you use it more as a side than anything. It's a good palate cleanser between vegetables and meat, etc.

But hey, that sounds really cool. Being able to add salt and stuff to your rice while it's on the stove. Sounds life changing. Really.

At some point your non stick coating was cleaned in a very aggressive way (scratch pad/pots n pans cycle), and is no longer there.

You can either use a little bit of olive oil and stir your rice up with it, or get a new pot.

If you have damaged a bunch of your non stick pans I suggest just buying a spray can of the stuff and recoating and baking into all your damaged cheap pots and pans. As it is quite cheap to do (less than $10).

A person is happy with their $300 purchase and there are people trying to make them feel bad for their purchase. What's wrong with a $300 ricecooker if it's something they use everyday, they can afford it, and they are happy with it? If they eat rice every day they aren't ignorant of the various ways it can be prepared. They know how to cook it stovetop and know the difference between different ricecookers.

The texture changes completely. It comes out light and fluffy with a perfect moisture that isn't too dry or too soggy. The shape of the grains is also different. It basically comes out like the kind of rice you'd make sushi with.
