Notice all the things that deal with being a nerd.
Books. Fantasy and science fiction.
Lord of the rings, star wars.
Video games.

All this is escapism.

As opposed to enjoyment being going to the gym and working out or working on a car for an entire weekend.

Going to the gym or working on cars are forms of escapism though.

What are you escaping from?
Cars are part of everyday life.

Stereotypically speaking:

Nerds are supposed to be the really smart, not always socially adept people. The ones who will sign their detractors paychecks and make all the cool gadgets that we employ in every day life.

Geeks are the not always socially adept people who are into comics, fantasy/sci-fi, shows, collectibles and games.
