Especially for 3-4, if you want co-op games you're left with spazzy shit like castle crashers. Which yes, is good, but gets old quick

If you mean strictly local co-op and not necessarily competitive local multiplayer, they're readily available on Nintendo systems.

Depending on what you are looking for, I could make some suggestions.

Some of my favorites (with 3-4 player options):
Snipperclips
Marvel Ultimate Alliance
Super Mario 3D World
Minecraft

Good suggestions thanks. Although the one that fits our group is probably just SM3DW and we're sick of it

if you like Castle Crashers but it's gotten old and you want something sorta similar feeling, but different enough to not just feel like a retread, and that has local co-op, try Lost Castle.

I'll look into that thanks

I wish Smash Ultimate had more co-op stuff for when a group of my friends and I don't want to play against each other anymore. You can do Multi Man Smash or whatever it's called with up to 4 players iirc, and of course 4v4 in regular Smash. How many people do you usually play with TC? Because I'm usually with two others if I'm ever playing multiplayer irl.

Oh and speaking of couch co-op, BL3's split screen is god awful wow.

I forgot to mention I'm looking less for party games which are a dime a dozen and more for co-op or adventure games, which are relatively rare. Especially 3p and over

And then differing tastes between us means there aren't a lot of options left...

I KNOW omg. For all it had bad Smash Brawl had co-op mode(s?). I wish they would have put themed challenges like Melee, some of them were even multiplayer I think.
As for your question, it varies 3 to 4 of us. I have a "party" group with whom I play party games and classic games competitively while doing drinking games, but this group doesn't drink so...

Local coop adventure games for 3-4 players have never really been that common from what I can recall outside of beat em ups.

If you like platformers Runbow is good.

I see you're sick of SM3DW. How are you with the other 4-player Mario games? New Super Mario Bros Deluxe is out on the switch and has great 4-player co-op.

I know you said that the MUA3 wasn't your type of game, but I definitely recommend it if you are just looking for something new. I never played 1 or 2 so I don't have a basis of comparison, but MUA3 with 4 players is some of the funnest I've had in years. And one of our players isn't even a Marvel fan. It's just fun to work together to get through the stages and go through the story.

Trine 4 is a cool 2.5D adventure game with 4-player co-op. It was just released this October. And I think the other Trines allow up to 3-player co-op.

Rayman Legends is another great 4-player co-op platformer, rivaling the NSMB games. Especially the music stages are hilarious with a group of 4.

Sweet then I'll give MUA3 a chance, thanks!
Trine 4, I might look into it. I know I didn't like Trine 2, I tried it when it got spammed over every platform, but 4 probably has a lot that's evolved from it.
Maybe Rayman, too. I know I tried it 2 players and didn't like it, but 3 might be more fun?

NSMBU Deluxe, well... I have NSMBU for Wii U and I'm pretty sure Deluxe is the same thing but with Toadette and bunny bag guy
