Seems shady as shit but is there some loophole in the laws that lets a company get away with this?

I mean, general stuff like buying a "company car" that realistically only one or two person uses for regular driving around, or "business trips" to a private residence.

Company car sure, but the employee should be getting taxed on the value of the benefit. Its legal. Regular commuting expenses should not be deductible. If theyre calling non-business trips, business trips, thats fraud and could be caught in an audit. But people can often find bullshit reasons to call something business related. --- I am the Cheese!
