I mean, it only ran for one season and got canceled, so it couldn't have been THAT popular, right? Yet I see it popping up all over the dang place and getting referenced constantly. What the heck? Why do people love the show so much?

I actually had this conversation with a friend just the other day.

It was fine. Actually, it was more than fine. It was good, but I dont know why people just dont... let it go. Sci-fi fans will stan something till the end of time as long as its decent, even though better things have come and gone since then.

It failed to do sci-fi or Western very well and is just a big ol' fanservice show from the get go. Like watch Cowboy Bebop, it's better

I don't get the hype whatsoever. My hot take on it started an argument with an ex

Its more of a cult hit that had really great and developed characters but thats about it.

The reason it was cancelled wasnt because it was bad, though. It was because Fox infamously aired the wrong episodes out of the original lot intended order which confused audiences story-wise, and they never really gave it a fair chance before putting it on the chopping block.

He made a follow up movie after the show was cancelled, called Serenity, and I think its even better than the show. As a die hard Joss Whedon fan, its probably my least favorite of his original series but I still love it to hell. The reason its my least favorite is because we never got enough time to see these character develope even further

If I had to rate his shows Id say it goes

Buffy > Angel > Dollhouse > Agents of Shield > Firefly

The characters. That's what really drew me in and kept me. I loved the characters. Their stories. How all of these wildly different people all ended up on the same ship, following the same path but all for different reasons. Mal was an terribly flawed person but he managed to care about everyone on his ship, even when they did something incredibly stupid or selfish and tried to sell someone out in a moment of fear and weakness. They were a messed up family that came together out of convenience for the most part and they all had their own motivations, but in the end they would go through hell for each other. Yes they were bandits. But they also put themselves at risk to help strangers along the way, for no other reason than it was the right thing to do and no body else was sta doing up for them. I enjoyed the setting and the stories. But it was totally about the people. They were what made me feel shit when watching that show. Most shows don't make me feel shit beyond a surface level entertainment. This show tugged at my heart strings on several occasions. Like the episode where Jayne decides to betray the doctor and his sister. That scene at the end between Mal and Jayne.

I wanted to know everything there was to know about these people. I wanted to see where their path was taking them. I wanted to see them grow. I wanted to see them win. I wanted to see them love.

While the whole space opera/western setting wasn't new, it was still very refreshing change of pace from the typical scifi setting that nearly every other show or movie would do. And they did the western/space thing better than anyone else who had tried it, IMO.

It was nice to see some closure with the movie. But the movie just didn't have the same feel as the show. There was something different about it. Something was off.

It would have gotten at least a second season on any other network. But they had the misfortune of being on Fox. Who terribly mishandled the show. Changing time slots. Showing episodes out of order. And their usual habit of canceling anything that wasn't a huge hit right from the get go.

The mix of humor and action, with likeable characters in an engaging setting.

The Expanse outpoints it on visuals, has likeable characters, but generally just misses the charm of Firefly.

Starhunter was good, actually Firefly borrows a lot from it, even to the point of mentioning the bounty hunters' "Trans-Utopian" spaceship in one episode, and Percy and Kaylee are similar, as are Zoe and Luc. Dark Matter with it's ensemble cast and humor probably comes closest to Firefly in appeal.
