I like to think of him as the Anthony Burch before people started hating on actual Anthony Burch. And people HATED this guy. I think it had something to do with his opinions on Japanese games.

Last I remember, he outright cancelled Fez II after a Twitter argument and that really upset his fanbase.

It wasn't just a twitter fight. That was the straw that broke the camels back, but he had been harassed consistently, and, unfortunately, he was the type to take that sort of thing to heart.

Part of his bad rep is warranted; he was shitty to Japanese devs at a game dev conference. That was probably the biggest factor in his hatedom.

I might be getting him confused with the wrong indie dev. But didn't he get upset because people were not enjoying one of his games the right way. Like some rapper loved the fact that you can go back in time and like really enjoyed playing the game and the dude seemingly got upset they guy didn't look deeper into it.

He worked for Ubisoft designing levels for Open Season and hated the vapid monotony of it. He couldn't handle forming his own indie dev company and had protracted legal battles with his first business partner. I think I remember from Indie Game: The Movie that his wife left him during the five year production. He blamed Microsoft for not promoting it enough during its one year exclusivity lease, said a bunch of stupid shit online, may have been doxxed, and then quit Fez II entirely. I just read he was involved with SUPERHYPERCUBE, a VR game that's right up my alley... if I had VR. It all sucks, 'cause I would love to experience Fez II based on how much I enjoyed the first.

You're thinking of Soulja Boy with Jonathan Blow's Braid - SB's later entry to the game world by selling garbage Chinese knockoff consoles at an inflated price was fucking hilarious. Braid was amazing, and The Witness is fucking insanely good. First person puzzle game with zero instruction where perspective is key and you feel like a genius as you progress. Lots of abstract philosophy thrown in too. He's working on his third game now.
