New Yorks Central Park has 23 statues of men, who left their mark in history, but not a single one honoring the accomplishments of a woman.

That will change after a city commission voted on Monday to erect a monument depicting three pioneers in the fight for womens rights: Susan B Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Sojourner Truth.

The likeness of Truth, an escaped slave and abolitionist, was belatedly added to the sculpture in response to criticism that African American suffragists were initially excluded.

This statue conveys the power of women working together to bring about revolutionary change in our society, said Pam Elam, president of the monumental women not-for-profit of volunteer advocates, historians and community leaders, which has gained key support from the Manhattan borough president, Gale Brewer.

The organizations statue fund privately raised $1.5m to create and maintain the new monument and for an associated educational program.

The work will be dedicated in August 2020 on the Mall, an elegant park promenade lined with American elm trees. Next year marks 100 years since American women won the right to vote.

The bronze work by artist Meredith Bergmann will join statues of men including Christopher Columbus, Alexander Hamilton, William Shakespeare and Sir Walter Scott.

The Public Design Commission, which reviews artworks on city-owned property, granted approval Monday for Bergmanns design chosen from 91 competing submissions.

My hope is that all people, but especially young people, will be inspired by this image of women of different races, different religious backgrounds and different economic status working together to change the world, Bergmann said after the vote.

Susan B Anthony was an American social reformer and womens rights activist, born in 1820, who played a pivotal role in the womens suffrage movement.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton, born in 1815 was known as a social activist, abolitionist and suffragist.

Sojourner Truth escaped from slavery in 1827. At the 1851 Womens Rights Convention in Akron, Ohio, she delivered her now-iconic speech titled, Aint I a Woman?

Way better than tearing down statues or modifying existing pieces of Art. They raised the money and have the space, go ahead and build it. Sounds like a pretty good addition to the park.

She actually supported multiple civil rights struggles for black people, but was adamant that black suffrage and women's suffrage should be one and the same and achieved simultaneously. In essence, she wanted black women to have the right to vote alongside black men.

I'm sure a few of the early feminists were directly anti-black. They were, predominately, rich people, a class of person historically known for being big smelly jackasses.

It doesn't matter.

Who's going to make the article stating that Susan B. Anthony was racist? Only someone on the far left or the far right would do that. And they'd be readily dismissed for having ulterior motives. As far as this statue is concerned, she's one of three women joining together for the sake of womanhood.

It's just funny to me that the accomplishments of the three women they chose were all obtaining rights things men already had the ability to do

Abolition and women's suffrage are great and all that, but if the goal is to celebrate women's achievements I would think it to be possible to find something that wasn't just aiding in the movement to change two laws that should never have been made in the first place. Not only that but these are also the same women who always get brought up when "female accomplishment" is discussed. It gives an impression, true or not, that women haven't made very many accomplishments if these are the only three women we ever talk about. Throw in someone who made a scientific discovery or something.
