My suggestion is to look into an Everdrive 64. Unless you can find games for somewhat reasonable prices.

I remember the Christmas when I got the N64. My parents and grandparents pretty much just sat around watching me play 1080 Snowboarding until my eyes hurt.

The year I got my N64 was the greatest Christmas of my life, gift-wise. We got the N64 along with Mario 64 (remember when pack-in games were a thing?) and Diddy Kong Racing.

Me and my brother played it for hours that night. Most of that time was spent exploring the outside of Peach's Castle, swimming in the moat and just enjoying the freedom of three dimensional space. That was a strong age of gaming, where 3D worlds were designed to be fun to explore for their own sake. I know I sound like some kind of bitter boomer by saying this, but:

Open world games in the modern age, no matter how big and expensive they are, will never capture the same wonder that Super Mario 64 did.

I mean, it's true.

You do sound like a boomer. But also, the limitations of the time forced them to make every little thing count.

If I took one lesson away from gaming and how it has evolved over the course of my life, it's that limitations breed innovation. Some of the most memorable music of all time exists because the designers had nothing but beeps and boops to work with, and that limitation spurred the invention of a new genre of music that continues to flourish today.

Smaller worlds, with more stuff to do per square foot, end up feeling larger than worlds like Breath of the Wild where 90% of the map is literally just empty space for the sake of being larger.

I don't think larger space is inherently bad, just for the sake of giving the player a true sense of scale. The problem is balancing that against feeling empty. Elder Scrolls handles it well; I'll always find something interesting when I go wandering off, and the music and landscape carry me in the meantime. In MGSV, I just used the helicopter always.

Exactly. Skyrim is one of the most "recent" open world games that has a well populated world. At some point around the release of Assassin's Creed, it became fashionable to make huge, detailed worlds with nothing interesting to do between missions. Something that's especially groan inducing is the trend of "collecting 134 of this item that's marked on your minimap."

That's not content.

God, AssCreed pisses me off. It's a great game trapped in a tank of bullshit. Here's literally the most freedom you can have with surface-based movement, now follow this very linear method to achieve the goal or you get a bullshit half-completion rate, because that's satisfying.

The Boergia Towers of Brotherhood were the ideal representation of what the game should be. Interwoven goals in a contained setting that make the most of the core mechanics and game knowledge. Completion is both rewarding in itself and by revealing further content, and completion sequence, with the bird, the jingle, and leap, are all at once satisfying and convenient in getting you off the tower and on to your next deal.

It's all tied together so fucking well.

Nail on the head. As the series "evolved," they tried too hard to make it a huge, 30+ hour game when an 8-12 hour version with way fewer b.s. objectives and collectibles would have left a way better taste in my mouth.

Open world doesn't necessarily mean better. Just look at MGS5. Games back in the 90s had one advantage: No DLC. DLC has allowed developers to create content past the initial release, so publishers aren't as willing to wait for a game to be finished before releasing. DLC should never be used to finish a game, only enhance it through expansions 2-3 years after the initial release.

I would recommend MK64 (obviously), Blast Corps (I'm not big into "gaming achievements" but holy fuck when I managed to 100% this game after having it for like a decade... that was something, Gauntlet Legends (if you like grindy games), Mystical Ninja (if you like Zelda-like games), Killer Instinct (if you like fighters), Star Fox 64 (inverted controls ftw), Mario and Kirby 64s (pretty much without saying if you like those series)
