That's really the only reason (at least in the US). I mean, you could download fansubs from FTPs or from IRC bots, but video compression was still a new thing and the episodes were usually only able to play in tiny windows and were rips from shitty VHS sources. You could have a local video store that had imports, too, but good luck with that in anything but a major city. You could also pay SunCoast $10 an episode for shitty chopped dubs of a few series. In the midst of that, though, was a cool series with giant robots and if you stayed up to watch it at 1am, even a few swears! WOW!
