its exploitative

Like, Native American headdresses are important to their culture for a variety of reasons, so its kinda jarring, and maybe even a little aggressive, when you see the culture that destroyed Native Americans (partially by spreading the idea that Native American culture and everything in it was less than those good ol Puritanical values the Europeans had) making those headdresses en masse as cheap party trinkets. Especially when Native Americans are still -still- suffering from the aftermath of colonization.

Is there a way to tell the difference between appropriation and just cultural osmosis? I mean, France didn't "appropriate" the Renaissance and Bohemia.

If you want an example that sorta plays into it, look at the early animatics for Lilo and Stitch. Lilos schtick was that she took pictures of tourists as a way to otherize them the way they did with her in her own ancestral land (the early drafts even explicitly had scenes of tourists talking at (not to) Lilo, and plainly and rudely asking her if she even spoke English.)

Im still pissed that never made it into the actual movie, because it wouldve further cemented that Lilo is an alien nobody really understands, just like Stitch is.

If youre looking for a fine line between appropriation and osmosis, youre out of luck, because there isnt one. Really, just take minority groups word for it when they tell other cultures specifically not to do [thing].

The noble savage is an outdated concept born out of the equally outdated concept of White Mans Burden. Natives killed, mutilated, other tribes long before the European set foot in the Americas.

Natives are given free land, housing, cars, education, and money. Yet all it takes to see them for what they really are is a trip to a reservation in the South West. Did you know that domestic violence and murder is frequently carried out against native women by their own families? Hundreds of native women go missing every year never to be found because their so called husbands murder them and the tribe looks the other way. Spend any length of time in the American south west and you'll begin to despise them.

^^^ This is why I don't say much about being a native online, there always someone out there who just hate natives, think we're savages and think we get everything for free.

Yeah, and thats between them to figure it out. But like it or not, Americans did, and still do, terrible things to the Natives. They directly profited from a genocide. Our culture did this, and our culture should be open about the consequences and what we can do to repair them.
