I don't see how we aren't. Everything we do is essentially reward-based. If there was no reward, we wouldn't do it.

Even stuff like volunteering is rewarding in the sense that you feel good for doing it. If not, how many would still invest their money and time to something they got absolutely nothing out of?

So you think that when people risk or even sacrifice their lives for a loved one ("take me hostage/kill me instead"), it's not really out of love but because they want to feel a warm glow of self-righteousness?

I mean, any interest can be interpreted as a self interest, in the sense that "saving this toddler from traffic is of great interest to me because I would be really sad for the toddler and its family if anything bad happened"

But in the sense of "I do things solely for base satiety", nah, that's not true at all.
