Weirdly this topic is the first time I've ever heard people call it a sloppy joe. My family has always referred to them as sloppy joes, and it's always specifically been in reference to the meat/stuff you put in the sandwich.

I've also eaten it out of a bowl plenty of times, so there's that.

So like if your family is talking about what you want on your sandwich, they'd say, "Hey VintageGin, what would you like on your sloppy Joes?" Even if they were making you a single sandwich?

But you seem to have just instinctively referred to "sloppy joes" as "them," which is plural, which you can't really refer to the meat/sauce that way.

Sure you can, because you can make multiple bowls of Sloppy Joes.

Nah, because youd say bowls of sloppy joe. Its not natural to pluralize something like that. We dont say soups when referring to one kind of soup, or sphagettis. You would never say them if just talking about one sauce/soup/etc.

I will defend this half point to the end

Like, you'd never say "Yeah, I have a pot of them" referring to a pot of soup.

You would say "Yeah, I have a bunch of them" referring to sandwiches.

I'm gonna count this as a half point for our side thank you sir for your contribution

But you seem to have forgotten not everyone has perfect grammar and sometimes people get confused over which pronoun to use when referring to singular entities that end in s. Either that or you're just assuming no one ever thinks of a singular sloppy joe and a sloppy joes, which this topic has already proven is not the case.

If I eat a pile of ham in a bowl I can call it a ham sandwich

Sandwich is structure based naming convention I already went over this. Sandwich requires two slabs of edible containing material to act as the shell, which a bowl does not provide. You could call it a ham pie if the bowl was edible.

The question is whether sloppy joe necessarily implies sloppy joe (sandwich) and I disagree it does because the signature filling is also called sloppy joe

The real problem is the naming for sloppy joe is sloppy itself, just as you'd expect

It never really came up like that. If sloppy joes were for dinner, then it was implied there would be a batch of the meat and I would have one or more sandwiches. (Also, confused by the question-- do people put other stuff on the sandwich?)

If there were leftovers then I might get asked if I wanted bread for a sandwich or something. But sometimes I'd just eat it by itself or with rice.

A wrap is a 360 degree sandwich.

A burrito is definitely a wrap.

I wouldn't call a wrap a type of sandwich or vice versa though there are enough similarities that if you wanna do that I'm not gonna fight you

Guys i just looked up the term that ends the argument

A "Sloppy Joe" is what is called a substantive adjective. A substantive adjective is an adjective that replaces the noun it is modifying, in this case 'sandwich'.
