https://www.nbcnews.com/mach/science/climate-scientists-say-greta-thunberg-s-efforts-are-building-real-ncna1059321

Environmental activist Greta Thunbergs searing address at the United Nations earlier this week earned enthusiastic praise from climate researchers, with many saying that the 16-year-old has found ways to raise awareness of climate science, galvanize support and resonate with people in ways that they have struggled to for decades.

Speaking as a climate change scientist who has been working on this issue for 20 years and saying the same thing for 20 years, she is getting people to listen, which we have failed to do, said Saleemul Huq, director of the International Centre for Climate Change & Development in Bangladesh.

I thought it was the most powerful speech Ive ever seen.

Sally Benson, co-director of the Precourt Institute for Energy at Stanford University, applauded Thunbergs emotional remarks and her efforts to mobilize young people to demand action on climate change.

She has been a catalytic leader, Benson said. Were seeing more grassroots action, and shes creating a movement where young people are pushing communities, cities, states and corporations and saying, were not going to wait.

There you go. That's what climate scientists are saying.

Is this a scientific analysis of climate change scientists consensus on Thunberg? Do we have data to show that she has actually effected real change?

lmao

goalposts ------> that way

Literally one article from NBC news with a few climate scientists quoted. Don't act like that equates to something definitive.

lmao compared to your please listen to anyone else but I wont tell you who bullshit hes got a lot more validity

Does anyone anywhere know climate scientists?

Looking it up yeah immediately after Greta's speech was the largest climate change protest so far.

Exactly.

Greta vs Scientists is disingenuous. Her speech, combined with the backing of findings from scientists has generated awareness and a catalyst for change among regular people. Regardless of whether the members of the UN listened or not, she has created awareness and encouraged change from regular people. She is essentially agreeing with the scientists purported to be knowledgeable on the subject, therefore cutting her down as the messenger based on her background or perceived shortcomings is also disingenuous.

is she offering a realistic solution? No, not really. Is she an expert? Probably not. Is she supporting scientific research and creating awareness? Absolutely. Unless you are refuting the science behind the argument, I'm not sure exactly why you would target her.

Just out of curiosity...Were those deleted posts on the first page attacks at Greta? You know, like the spoiled pig princess and whatnot? Because if so, why'd they get deleted? It's not like people don't insult Trump on a regular basis here, especially in regards to his questionable mental health.

Yeah the guys who are arguing she doesn't have a solution aren't really getting the point. Assuming they're even trying to be genuine.

We're not even at the 'find the solution' stage. We're at the 'convince the people in power this is a major problem' stage. Even she points out that it's shameful that she needs to appeal to people in power to help save her generations future.

The catalyst that forces a change is inevitable. I'd rather it be an emotional teenager than a severe disaster we aren't prepared for.

Do you have anything worthwhile to add? All youve done is dismiss literally everyone speaking out about climate change.

Literally no I haven't

I'm pro do something about climate change. I just think emotional speeches by teenagers are just there to make you feel good and have no lasting impact.

Protests barely accomplish anything. Look at all the protests over police shootings. Police still basically get to kill without much meaningful oversight. Protests just play into other issues.

People need to be better educated about this stuff. Raising awareness only really go so far. Reducing climate change is such a complicated discussion. You need to start making real plans for dealing with that. Everything is so interconnected yet separate. You can't just point the finger at a single company or group of companies. Companies all over the world do a variety of things and they compete with each other.

Thunberg's speech is basically just preaching to the choir
