but i know my local redcross keeps donations local and you can specify where a portion of the donation goes.

having worked in nonprofits I would say the exact opposite is true and the focus on the amount of money going to direct service provision is a big problem

administration is super important and allows for your service provision to be more efficiently managed and ensures better outcomes

also most volunteer time is kind of make work

This argument only works if youre against CEOs to make that much in general. Charities are run by professionals who will only work for competitive salaries.

So we're donating to an organization so that a CEO can make a million dollars to run it instead of that money going to actual problems

Those CEO salaries are high even at nonprofits because the nonprofits and charities want someone who is world-class and knows how to maximize the organization's income. A really good CEO is absolutely worth that much, otherwise they wouldn't pay that much and could hire any clown to do the job.

No but there are many that are grossly inefficent or are effectively a lucrative buisness lining the pockets of leaders rather than actually working towards the cause.

From what I can tell, his argument is that CEOs needed to run these places demand high wages, so they take the donations to pay the million dollar CEO salaries so that they can keep the place running and sucker more people out of their money to funnel back into the CEOs salary
