Yeah, if you liked skyrim it is a pretty safe bet.

I recently started a new play through with mods. There are some nice player housing mods if you don't like messing with the whole settlement thing.

I also liked making the waste a bit more green, and allowing you to transfer legendary effects which takes out the only part of the game that really annoyed me.

The plot can be pretty lame, and the dialogue system is mostly bad, but you can still have the usual Fallout fun through exploration and blowing ghouls' heads off. Settlement building can add another level of fun, though I'm sure it's 500 times better with mods.

If you go into it expecting an experience like skyrim I think you'll enjoy it. If you expect it to be more like a fallout game that's where the criticism comes in.

Personally I really enjoyed tinkering with settlements too

It's a game/plot that had a lot of potentially, but they did the bare minimum with it as they seem to have done since Skyrim.

Some of the characters ain't bad and do have the occasional good side story. If you like just random exploring it's pretty fun as well.

It's really fun, but... prepare to invest a significant portion of your life to planning the perfect layout and unneccessarily optimised defences for the superfortress you are unlikely to ever complete.

It's fairly okay as a standalone game, enjoyable. I didn't like it as a Fallout game necessarily. The best thing the game added was sprinting tbh lol. If you give it a shot and enjoy it, check out the DLC Far Harbor. It was a lot more of what I wish the game was. I think they really listened to fans on that one.

I also recommend doing an "asshole build" as a character. Your dialogue doesn't really affect the outcome of any situation like in past Fallout games, so choose the sarcasm response every time it comes up. The voices and what they actually say can be pretty damn funny sometimes. Totally dickish, but funny.

If you have that robot DLC, you can make your own robot companions with weapons to your preferred specifications. Having a helper who doesn't spew the same repeated voicelines is enjoyable. Robots are subject to the stringent development requirements, though, so if you want some of the regular ones, I liked using MacReady and Cait/Piper. The former is in Goodneighbor's metro bar, IIRC.

Only if you never use explosives. Or can tolerate his habit of blocking doors, or wanting to run away from you every time you want to access his inventory (I'm glad Bethesda gave the ol' college try in giving a companion more sophisticated AI that just trailing behind you, but it did more harm than good in this case).

Most of the companions are on a pretty even plane; you'll want to go with the ones who have fairly powerful default weapons like Danse and Preston, since they'll be ammo hogs in the early game. Codsworth and Curie (before she gets her synth body) are quite good in this regard also. And don't bother trying to make anyone melee-only; they'll just grab the first weak-ass firearm they find lying around and use that instead.

Eventually you'll want to get max affinity with everyone so you can get their companion perks, which will give you plenty of time to figure out who you like best.

EDIT and yes, I forgot Automatrons, which blow vanilla companions out of the water. The only downside is that they are not essential, so make sure and build 'em beefy.
