The entire DC universe being this gritty dark scene is kinda weird sometimes, but I think they did a decent job with Joker.

On one hand, I'm glad that DC finally got another good movie after their post-Wonder Woman drought. On the other hand, this means the tired dark and gritty cliche that was getting old a decade ago is now gonna be back in full swing.

What's next? More zombie and vampire movies?

I think it's because the Joker was dark, but realistically dark. For example, the color palette was gloomy, but actually a pretty accurate depiction of New York City

Zombieland 2 comes out next week.

Zombieland is a spoof though. It's a standalone film which does it's own thing. I doubt it will spark a new wave of zombie movies.

Yeah. Putting a dark filter over everything (like Snyder's DC films) just makes the entire film so depressing and unenjoyable.

Yeah, the grittiness itself is fine, with proper direction. There's a reason it worked with the TDK trilogy. And DC won't be able to outplay Marvel at their own game.

I don't think that should be their only approach, though. Do we really need a gritty Flash or gritty Superman all the time? I think more can be done with their characters than "My parents are deeeeeeeeead!"

To be honest, it probably would work if Batman and Suicide Squad are dark, Superman and Wonder Woman are heroic figures with a bit of drama, and Aquaman and Flash are straight up MCU characters. Like you said, they can't beat the MCU at their own game. But they also can't realistically make everything grimdark and make it work.

"I'm Batman and my life is Hell."
"I'm Superman and my life is Hell."
"I'm the flashy guy who runs really fast and life is Hell."

How Lego Batman got away with being a parody of grimdark DC is anyone's guess.

Batman and his characters have always been appropriately dark. DC's problem is thinking what works for Batman works for all their characters when it doesn't.

I did and I'm not seeing how it was grimdark if that's what your implying. It was a light hearted comedy superheroes movie

I mean, those are two outlying scenes in an otherwise lighthearted movie.
And the contrast worked, IMO. Made the scenes more shocking when it comes to establishing the villain.
