I prefer Ledgers version since I think he was more of a loose cannon (like the face-pencil that came out of nowhere), while Phoenixs didnt have that unpredictability (like when he put the scissors in his pocket so you know he was gonna kill a person, or when he was rehearsing shooting a gun with a knock knock joke).

But what do you think?

I loved both of their takes on Joker, but Phoenix had to carry the whole movie himself, and really sell his descent into madness and taking on the character's mantle, so he gets my vote.

The Jokers are also on different levels of maturity.

Ledger goes in as an evolved Joker that's put his time in.

Phoenix Joker just started coming together near the end of the movie, he's still an amateur.

I'd give it to Ledger as I like seeing full Joker running around. Tbh

Ledger

Phoenix was a character study. Ledger was already fully fleshed out. Recency bias is the only reason Joaquin is winning

I'm basing my vote on each actors performance and not just the Joker character

Ledger played the Joker after years of being the Joker.
Phoenix played Arthur Fleck as he tried to find meaning and control in his life.

It's two entirely different performances. Not fair to compared them.

I liked ledger's performance but it's as far from The Joker character as Jessie's Lex Luthor is from that character.

I mean, for that matter, none of the rogues in Nolan's trilogy actually felt like comic adaptations except Selina Kyle.

Phoenix played a character that, by the time the movie was over, felt like the real Joker.

Heath Ledger's Joker is a better villain. Opaque, threatening, unpredictable

Joaquin Phoenix's Joker is a better protagonist. Relatable, yet disturbing. Forces the audience to ask hard questions about themselves

Phoenix didnt get very much time to really play full Joker.

Once he started doing that interview he showed real promise, but it ended too soon.

I feel like comparing them would be like comparing Batman Begins Bale to 89 Keaton. One has to tell a story about how they became that way, and the other is introduced to us fully formed

Phoenix put himself out there in a way that I don't think Ledger did, or perhaps even had the opportunity to. Phoenix's Joker was far more vulnerable and had a lot more to work with as the main protagonist.

Yeah it's just apples and oranges.

The way a villain needs to be written and portrayed is completely different than the needs of a protagonist, even if the protagonist is meant to be a bad guy
