Current Events > Does DOOM 2016 have a story or is it a bunch of loosely connected levels

Kinda want to get an FPS, this one's cheap and I miss those sort of classic shooter games.

It's got a story and isn't structured at all like a classic shooter with a collection of mostly-unrelated levels, it's basically Doom 3 where you're constantly going through a continuous chain of areas but they drop the horror aspect in exchange for locking you into arenas and making you kill stuff until the door opens and you repeat.

If you're looking for something classic styled like Doom or Quake, you'll be disappointed unless your only barometer for that is killing a bunch of stuff. If you're a fan of later FPS games like Serious Sam and Painkiller, you'll like it

DUSK is a game that's built a lot like the first Quake and is absolute amazing.

AMID EVIL is a modern tribute to Hexen/Heretic

I've only played Dusk but it's everything Doom 2016 should have been. Heard good things about AE too

We don't know where they're exactly going with who doom guy is, but all we know is that hes a descendant to a group of knights who fought the enemies of hell through history.

Doom Guy seems to be the most bad ass of them all. And apparently both heaven and hell hate them.

Also I think he's known in this iteration as "Doom Slayer." A more modernized name to reflect his bad-assery.

I kinda wonder how much background story/lore will be in Eternal.

There is a story, but the protagonist doesn't give a shit about anything than killing as many demons as he can.

For example, in the first couple minutes, another character tries to talk to the Doom Slayer over a computer console and his immediate reaction is to punch the console.

I'll chime in again with a quote from Civvie 11 (Youtuber who did review/impressions videos for DUSK and AMID EVIL) that I think is very accurate with regards to DUSK:

Don't be fooled into thinking you're playing some Quake clone. . . . That's one of the tricks the game pulls on the player. . . . It knows what you're thinking.

I just finished out my first playthrough the other day and I'm on World 4 in AMID EVIL. I cannot recommend those two games enough. Just thoroughly amazing.

Dusk and Amid Evil are amazing. If you can only get one I recommend Dusk first. DOOM 2016 is also great. Doom Eternal is only two months away.

Pretty much this. The story is minimal, because thats the only kind of story DOOM needs.

DOOM had always been about intuitive gameplay and tight controls. Theres are demons in front of you who are trying to kill you. You dont need a story to tell you what youre supposed to do about that. In the original 2 DOOM games, the only story you got was 3 or 4 chunks of scrolling text after you beat like 9 levels, explaining that you were moving from one of Marss moons to Hell or something like that. The rest of the story was whatever happened during your experience while you were shooting demons and whatnot.

Yo TC look up the game Wrath: Aeons of Ruin

Its a game coming out next year using a modified Quake 1 engine that has the best Level designers from the Quake modding scene (some who have been making Quake levels for over 20 years) working on it.

tbh i had the opposite problem

Enemies in Doom 2016 are really easy to kill, too much so honestly, and instead of setting up interesting encounters with them to make for memorable fights and cover for their weaknesses a la literally any retro FPS, they mitigate it by throwing a million of them at you and keeping you in one area while you fight them all. I honestly have a really hard time remembering any specific fight from the game whereas in the old Dooms there are multiple rooms I can rattle off of the top of my head that I absolutely adore due to enemy setups. THe levels themselves are mostly the same and are very linear besides occasional segments that more feel like they were like "oh, we -have- to jam some exploration in here because people expect it". Super forgettable.

Also just a preference thing but the soundtrack is maybe the most overrated thing ever. It's just shitty djenty chugging that is just as interchangeable as everything else about the game

It's weird. I usually love FPS games. Even mindless ones like Serious Sam. But I just can't get into Doom. I've tried twice now.

I get why people like it. But after a couple of hours it just sort of feels like I know what the rest of the game is and I don't really need to keep playing.
